Winchester 435
« on: November 20, 2009, 09:26:03 PM »
I have a break-barrel 177 that is marked; Winchester, model 435, made in Germany. That is about all I know about it. It seems to be high quality and quite accurate. It weights about the same as my Steyr-Mannliecher [heavy]. The open sights are a real work of art. I added a good 4x rifle scope.  Any background on this would great.

does it also say made in Turkey on the barrel?
If so these are interesting rifles. I think they are
made in Turkey, imported by Daisey and distributed by
Winchester. They are quite accurate.

I did some of my own research and found a great Forum at Pyramid Air.  The rifle is a 'Diana' 35, marketed under various brands including Winchester. Diana production ended in 1987. I think mine is a mid-70 product. Considered high powered 35 years ago it was out performed  by the later long piston units. I thought the rear optical sight was complex, the trgger assembly is incredible. It is a ball-bearing device that looks like it came from a pre-war machinegun.  They called it an 'adult' airgun, you have to be to even pick it up. I saw an estimate of the value at $1000 for a so-so rifle, $2000 for a nice one. I also saw an nice one [?] offered for $400. I wouldn't pay $2000 for one of these NIB autographed by Paul Mauser. I don't shoot this much, I do display it.

thats the very one, It is also called a Beeman 200.
weighs about 8 pounds. Not nearly as powerful as
a modern springer but more accurate than most.
I still believe the trigger mechanism is pretty much
unique to that model. A very nice rifle.

$2000 is ridiculous for a Winchester 435. 200 is more in line with reality.
The trigger is not as complex as all that. Its the 3 ball sear design, fairly simple really once you figure out how it works. The 3 ball sear was used on many of the older Diana rifles.

actually one did sell for well over a grand, not sure what was special about it.
Could have been a super low serial number or something.

On my Winchester 435, on the piston tube ( I'm at a loss as to what that part is really called) It says made in Germany, I bought it new in around 1973, to replace a Diana mod 35, that I had to sell when times got rough, That one was purchased in 1967 while I was in Germany in a military rod and gun club.

Your 435 is indeed a rebadged Diana 35.  The ball sear trigger is excelent if adjusted correctly.  Only one of the trigger screws is for adjustment, the other , if it has one, is just to lock down the other one.  On the left side of the reciever tube, near the end of the scope rail is the manufacturing date, month and year.  Many were made for HyScore.  The Beeman version had a different stock.
