Flatlander

Have you considered adjusting your sights to be 3" high at 50 yards? That puts you more in the ballpark at 75 yards. If 80 grains is your max before groups start spreading, try a wad between the patch & powder. That may keep you tight & still bullseye close at 75 yards. Just a suggestion! BTW & just curious! What are you using to formulate a .021 patch?

bprc....check out Dutch's site at   www.bpaccuracy.com  I guarantee it will be the best $15.00 investment youll ever make.

triple seven....I dont understand what you mean by "what are you using to formulate your patches" Are you asking how Im measuring them or how Im lubing them?  And I dont see what adding a wad between the patch and powder would do for me. My patches are coming out intact so theres no need for an extra buffer there. And yeah Ill probably sight in a little high when I get a chance to shoot again and adjust the sights a tad.

Good shooting Flatlander .54....

If it will shoot like that at 50yds, it shoud be good at 75 & 100 yds for deer hunting. That barrel is shooting roundballs better than 90 % of them will in that twist.
Triple Seven, adding a card wad or any wad between the powder and patched ball sure adds pressure to the barrel. A good tight patch and ball combination should be sufficient. It is easier to load also in a pinch.
Good luck on your hunt Flatlander.
I got my .55 cal flinter w/42" barrel out and shot a couple through it. It is always the same, with fixed sights. 90grn fff Goex, .025 patch and .540 pure cast ball. The load has to be hammered in but I have never had to shoot a second round. I do carry a couple of speed loaders with thinner patch for a second shot, just in case.

Flatlander,

I did something similar with my .54 after purchasing Dutch's system and doing some experimentation with lubes.  Three shots in a hole that could be covered by a nickel at 50yds.  80gr of FFFg, .015 mattress ticking and a .530 ball.  The ability to group that well goes a long way to becoming comfortable with the rifle and its capabilities.  That's some good shooting...Hollis

Thanks for the praise fellas. Next chance I get I intend to reach out there at 75 and 100 yards to see how much spread I get. Im hoping no more than 1 1/2" at 100 but would be tickled to death with 2" considering my eyes arent the best at longer ranges and open sights.  The areas I hunt rarely call for shots over 50 yards anyway but Im curious as to what I can wring out of it at 100 yards. I know now that the rifle and Dutch's system are capable of way better accuracy than my eyes can shoot.

Regardless, that group would never have happened if it hadnt been for the info learned from Dutch's system. Ill praise it and him till my dying day for sure. Never in my life would I have thought groups like that were obtainable from an "old outdated inaccurate muzzleloader" as some call them.
