270 win and 115 grain bullet
« on: November 21, 2009, 09:22:35 AM »
I got about 300 of these 115 grain midway bullets from Tn_Junk before he passed away along with a coffee can full of 130's......

I've not loaded any of the 115's yet and they look like a nosler Ballistic tip.

My 130 grain .270 win load uses Reloader-22.  I also have some IMR-4381sc and some IMR-4350.  In the way of medium or faster burning powders I've got IMR-3031 and Winchester 760.

Has anyone got any experience with the 115 grain bullet?

I'm thinking the slow power is going to be the ticket and plan on starting with the reloader-22....

What say you?

Years ago when I was loading the 270 Winchester for my son I used surplus 4831 and 110-grain Sierra bullet with good results.  I think you are on the right track and the bulk of the slow burning powder plays a role in accuracy.

The 115s are made for the 6.8 Remington which pushes them MUCH slower than a .270 Win will. They might do OK but I'd be concerned about bullet blow up at real close ranges with them if you load them to the max velocity the .270 can push them. Personally I'd use them primarily as target or plinking rounds and stick to bullets made for the .270 but that's without me having tried them. Heck they might be plenty tough I'd just wanna check it out first.

I'm thinking more 4831 or 4350 then RL-22, just a feeling :-\

My thoughts are that since that bullet is "light" for the 270 Winchester caliber, a slightly fast powder than 4350 or 4831 might work better...

The problem with the slow burners is the fact that once you get toward the middle to maximum load, you run out of space in the 270 case with the slow burners, 4831 will fall into this category from time to time...

Maybe H-380 or Reloder 15 or 21...

Just my thoughts...BCB

Its real simple, just check the online reload data from the powder mfgrs and follow
the trend  in powder use and quantity as the bullets get heavier and lighter.

It wont be hard to extrapolate and you might get lucky and they have
reload data for bullets very close to your weight.

I shoot 120 gr from 7mm Rem Mag at similar pressures and I'd say our
optimum powders would probably be the same.

Accurate 3100   (possibly Magpro)
Alliant REloader 22  or maybe 19
Hogdon Hybred 100V
Vihatori N560
IMR 4831

My bullet of choice now is the ProHunter at 120gr and I respect that
it is not a bone crusher.   My target is lungs so as to not
destroy any shoulder meat and I want  extreme expansion on
the soft sponge lung tissue.      Nosler BT also work well
for the longer shots that boattailed bullets give me.

I had a peek at the Hodgdon Site and they don't show loads for a 115 gr bullet.

The closest weight is a 120 gr Barnes. The powder that gives max velocity is IMR 4064.

My guess is they'll "evaporate" a crow at 100 yards, and turn a ground hog inside out at the same distance...... :)

I really wasn't thinking of hunting big game with them. :(

I thought H4831 was the only powder for the .270.
You mean there are other powders that work?

Years ago I was given some either 110 or 115 grain bullets of an unknown make. I still have most of a box of 50 loaded. I couldn't tell you what powder was used or how much of it. I have a pretty good idea considering what I had at the time but it would be mostly a guess. However they have been a fun load. They shoot inline but about 3" lower than my hunting loads(150gr Partitions over a stiff charge or IMR 4350).

They shoot fairly well and do impressive things to Chucks and other small 4 legged problems. Personally I don't know if I would buy more as I have enough other rifles that need shot that it would be a load I just don't use. But I would be happy to take some more free ones.

I have a 6.8 that would love those 115's.

I loaded the 115 grain in front of 55 grain, 56 grains and 57 grains of Winchester 760.

I went to the range yesterday and although each 5 shot group had 2 or three touching, the five shot groups were around 2 inches, or not exactly what I'm looking for.

I didn't chrono the loads and they were about 3 inches higher than my 130 grain load.

I'm thinking I'll try IMR4831 next.

The good news is I think I found a good load for the 130's Remington core lots that I got from TN Junk.

had one group at 3/4 inch.  I plan to load up 20 and see if the load groups constant and repeatable but it looks promising.

I was surprised how critical OAL seems to be with this bullet.

I use 115gr Core Lokt Ultras for a reduced load in my 12 year old's deer rifle.  37gr of H4895 and a CCI 200 delivers 2534fps with moa accuracy and PERFECT mushrooms in water jugs at 100 yds.

I called Sierra today, as I think these are 115 grain match kings.

They tell me to use the data for the 110 grain bullet and to try IMR 4064, reloader-19 and IMR 4350.  I already had the 4350, and now I'm the proud owner of a pound of the other two as well......

I finally got back to the range to try the 115 with IMR-4064.....yep, it's the ticket...

I got a couple of groups around an inch, now to play with the seating depth.......
