problem at the range today with my Knight DISC
« on: November 21, 2009, 03:48:01 PM »
Hi guys, been a while since i posted but still lurking around ;)
i went to the range today with one of my daughters and after waking up everyone with a few magazines out of a mosin nagant, she decided she wanted to shoot my disc rifle.
the first shot was fine....everything was normal.  she loaded the rifleand dropped a primer in the bolt.
when she closed the bolt, the rifle discharged.
she did not have her fingers anywhere near the trigger, when the bolt closed it fired.
luckily she listened to me when i told her to always keep a gun pointed downrange when it's loaded.

i tore the rifle down right there and me and the RSO looked it over, didn't find anything unusual.
we never could get it to duplicate the firing,  i don't have a clue as to what happened.

you guys ever see this happen to a disc rifle???

I have several Disc Rifles, never had a problem. I wonder if some crud got stuck on the trigger sear.

Was the trigger safety on safe or fire? Was the firing pin forward and did it strike the primer? Could there have been a piece of the primer from the previous shot stuck in the bolt?

The secondary bolt safety would have stopped it, but nobody wants to mess with that every shot at the range.

The Knights cock on opening, not closing, so something must have gotton between the trigger sear and the bolt/firing pin? Or you have a faulty trigger. Was the trigger screw tight to the receiver?

Don't know what to tell you, but something has to be faulty. I would see if you can repeat it with an unloaded rifle.

Glad to hear nobody got hurt, and your daughter was safety concious.

I'll admit that the safety was off when she closed the bolt, both me and the RSO said something to her about that.  we tried to duplicate it several times, but never could get it to fire like that.
i didn't notice anything when i cleaned it either.
i talked to her again last night and she said it's possible she might have hit the trigger with her pinky, but she didnt' think she had , and i didn't see her fingers near the trigger when she closed the bolt.
i suppose it's possible.
it's a good reason to set the safety every time, and we both screwed up there.
luckily it didn't do any damageto anything or anyone

Hopefully it doesn't scare her away from shooting. We need all the participants we can get for years to come.

Thanks for posting this, it is a reminder for everyone than you can never be too safe while shooting or handling firearms. I'm sure she will always remember this, and it will make her more safety concious, as well as all who read this.

The sear engagement may need to be adjusted for a little more engagement.  As Busta said, make sure the trigger retaining screw is snugged up good.

And as Busta indicated, even a small piece of debris sitting in the wrong place can produce such a result without leaving a trace.

Adjusting a Knight trigger....

The last adjustment is the key... back the setting off at leat 1/4 turn...
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
