Hello
Deer season Opened here in East Tennessee Yesterday morning, so I decided to take along my Hamilton Bowen  Smith & Wesson Model 16-4 Revolver that had been modified to the new Federal .327 Magnum Caliber. I had been recently hand loading some rounds using brass donated by forum member David Ballantyne {Thank's Dave} and worked up a very Potent load using Accurate Arms #7 Powder along with a Sierra 90 Grain Copper Jacketed Hollow point and CCI-550 Magnum Powder. This Load showed to group the size of a dime on  on the 20 Yard Line at my Range Late Thursday afternoon, so I decided to use it hunting.

I had my Marlin 336 Lever rifle chambered in .35 Rem. Caliber as well. I entered the woods just before daylight and Positioned myself about 30 Yards off a main Deer run. I had not seen a Deer and about Quarter to Eight, I began to wonder if the Presence of a Big Wild Cat had spoiled my chances of seeing any Bucks ? My Buddy who owns the land we hunt had warned me he had seen a Huge wild Cat the week before in his back yard about Noon. It apparently was stalking his House Cat's and he Feared it would attack them. I assured him, if I should see it in the woods he would have no more worries.

At 5 Minutes to Eight, I heard a small twig snap behind me. I looked up that way, and there was This Big Bobcat standing there Looking at me. I slowly raised my revolver that was in my lap and took aim. I was shaking fiercely, so I had to tell myself this was the chance of a life time shot, and to calm down. I knew the gun and load would do the Job if I did mine. I gently squeezed the trigger and the cat fell over Instantly.

I then called my Son in law who was hunting with me on his First Deer hunt and told him to get up to where I was sitting. He asked if I had shot a buck, and I told him I had killed that Big Bobcat. He did not believe me, but Joined me shortly. I dragged it out of the brush I had shot him in, and noticed the slug entered his left chest cavity and exited out his right rib cage. When I Gutted him out It had hit his Heart and right Lung before exiting. This cat weighed about 50 pounds and his stomach was the size of a Youth Football in size filled with what appeared to be fresh rabbit. He never made a sound nor moved after I shot him, so I guess it is safe to say the .327 Magnum more than did it's Job, and this may make the Non Belivers of this round take notice of how potent it really is. Before we left the woods, We Paced it off from where I shot this cat from and it was a true 35 Yard shot. I am still in Awe that I Bagged this animal and will have a Full Mount done of him.

Congratulations on the harvest.  However, I would be willing to bet that is not the only one on that farm.

Looks like it will make a nice rug............I killed one several years ago and had it made into a rug with the claws and head attached. It never was used as a rug but as a wall hanging in my office, it made a good conversation piece.  Someone liked it better than I did, it departed with them.

Hello Guys & Gals
Thanks again for the Kind words. The actual weight of this cat has come up on another Gun Board. I had an Arm Chair Hunting Expert tell me that there was no way this Cat weighed 50 Pounds. :confused:This forced me to drag him out of deep freeze for a close up and personal weigh in. I feel the Internals of this Cat before it was dressed would have easily made up the Lacking Ten Pounds from the weight actual shown. Funny, The Guy did not respond after I Posted the Picture below...:D

Nice shooting HD! Nice cat too. I've got a .32 H&R Mag barrel on a contender that I look at some times and wonder about having it reamed to .327 just for fun.

Great Job Hammerdown! Good on you too for defending the 327 Federal Magnum. Lots of naysayers who havent a clue about this little bullets potential. My own 327 Federal was built by Alan Harton on a Single Six. I exit a 118 grain LBT gas check at 1550 fps.....
its the one on the bottom. Shown with a Harton custom 32 mag and a OMSBH converted to Bisley by Harton. Amboyna burl stocks on all 3 sixguns.

Hello 2Dogs
Great Looking Revolvers you have there. We as .32 Caliber Lovers HAVE to endorse the New Federal .327 Magnum. Without us shooters of it Pushing to keep it alive it may R.I.P. Like the .32 H&R Magnum did. This new .327 Magnum is what the .32 H&R Magnum SHOULD have Been ! I have made a contact with The Editor of American Handgunner who is Roy Huntington. I shared with him my Hunting story and the use of my S&W Revolver in .327 Magnum used to Harvest it. He has agreed to try and Place the article in an upcoming issue. Here is a copy & paste version of his responding E-mail to me. The .327 Magnum is about to become Famous and I bet Mine was the First in that caliber to harvest a Wild Cat...Regards, Hammerdown

An interesting story, Kurt, and congratulations are definitely in order. A nice shot, a nice revolver and a nice cat, indeed!
If I have room, I may be able to run a picture and a paragraph in my Insider column. I'll see, and let you know.
Thanks for reaching out and for the pics. I'll follow-up with you when I know if I have the room.
Adios,
Roy H.

Hammerdown,

Now that is one big bobcat. I live in Arkansas and my brother in law and some of his hunting buds had some hounds that loved to run cats. One year they killed 15 more or less and the smallest weighed 17 pounds and the largest weighed 22. I shot a couple with my 10/22 while hunting swamp rabbits with my beagles. The largest weighed 28 pounds and that was a big cat, but the ole 10/22 dropped him.

I guess that you were in a ground blind? perhaps a tree stand?...moot points but the cat had evidently caught your scent or perhaps was checking out a subtle movement on your part with yourself being blended in on the whole?

The Bobcat's are very few in my area but I did have an encounter several years ago while coon hunting with a cousin. We were moving of course but made several stops to listen to the dogs. It was on one of these stops that we were joined by something that stayed very close to us but we never did see it. It stayed so close in fact that at times we could hear it walking and breathing on the edges of standing corn here or brush there. It was not until our return that we got a quick look at the cat as it disappeared from a thin strip of the picked corn stubble into more standing corn.

I always wondered what that Cat was about stalking two people with a good light that was being used intermittantly. Perhaps it just wanted some company or more likely, it was waiting for an opportunity food wise?

I do know of a predator hunter who spoke of calling in a cat to his left but he decided to ignore it as one of the $50 (at that time) Coyote's showed up on his right. He went on to say that he gave the cat an exciting 10 sec ride on his shoulders after trying to coax that yote on in!

The Bobcat is very rare around here as said but their numbers are starting to grow within the last two years. I just dont know how they reacted around people in the areas where plentyful other than being very reclusive and secretive.

Congratulations On Yours 8)

Hello glanceblamm
I was sitting on a 90 Degree Bent Tree Limb that was about 30" off the ground and provided a Good seat allowing me to see all around me. The Cat came in above me as I sat about 20' from a  Main Deer run he was about 10' above it working slowly down a fence row that bordered a field the Other side of him. The wind was down hill towards me so I don't feel he caught any scent and I was dressed in Full Camouflage so I doubt he even noticed me. What apparently startled him was when I raised my revolver and cocked it to fire position. Whether he saw movement or heard the action of it still remains a mystery to me and always will. As I said, Initially when I Put the revolver sights on him, I was Shaking. perhaps he saw the barrel moving as the sun was Brilliant. I then got control of my emotions and drew down fine before I fired the lethal shot on him... Hammerdown

Hello Shootall

The revolver shown above was made in The late 1980's mid 1990's time span when S&W was owned by The Brit's Leir-Sigler. It was named the Model 16-4 and chambered in .32 H&R Magnum. According to The Stats they Only made 8800 of them in 4"-6" and 8-3/8" Barrels before discontinuing them in 1993 time span. Mine was made the first year for them being 1989. You can fire the following Calibers in this revolver being .32 ACP, .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long & .32 H&R Magnum

The Cartridge was designed for H&R Revolvers of slightly weaker design so the velocity of it was heavily over shadowed by the classic .38 Special at an average of 1100 FPS so it never really caught on as a Hot new Caliber widely accepted by her shooting Public. Another Factor that Killed the Cartridge was that The H&R Company went Bankrupt shortly after the Cartridge was released. Federal came out with it and it was not manufactured by any other ammo companies so rounds for it can be a challenge to Locate

I always Liked any .32 Caliber rounds in handguns so it was a natural for me to Buy this revolver. The only way to see the true Potential of the .32 H&R Magnum is to hand load for it which I did from the start buying Starline brass to use in it. I experimented with the round to the Point of Blowing the small magnum Pistol primers. I then switched to Small rifle primers and over came that issue to take this round to new levels of velocity. I Chronoed a load using Hornady's XTP 85 Grain bullet at 1485 FPS But Ran out of Case room for more Powder so I had to quit my Experimenting. :(

Prior to this revolver, S&W used to make the Model 16 that got it's Model number Post-1957. It was called The K-32 Masterpiece and they were used to shoot Bullseye, being Chambered in .32 S&W Long Caliber. Prior to 1957 They were simply called The Pre-16's as they did not have model numbers stamped into the crane area. Shown below is an early Pre-16 that shipped in 1951. It has an early Post-War Barrel that is of Thin design and later S&W changed the Barrels to a wider design to make all of The Masterpiece series weigh the same including the K-22, K-32 & K-38. The Pre-16 is The Rarest of all of the Masterpiece series being made from 1939 a Pre-War Model to 1974 Being a Model 16-3 series. In total they made the K-32's 35 Years and only 3,630 of them were ever produced, so they are very hard to find out there.

I was very Lucky to find mine shown and it took me almost two years to get it. A friend of mine had it that I met on The Internet. He did not shoot it anymore, But did not want to Part with it. He Teased me with it almost two Full years till he felt confident I would not sell Nor Trade it once we made a deal, I swapped him Two revolvers for the one shown. At the time I had no idea his was a pre-16 with a Narrow barrel. It is a Five screw configuration with narrow Barrel and Fish Hook Speed Hammer. It is very accurate and real touchy of what it likes to shoot Load wise.

A couple of Years ago Federal released a Newer style .32 magnum called The .327 magnum. This New Cartridge is close in Comparison to The .38 Special-.357 Magnum. They did the same Case Length change with the .32 H&R Magnum that was done to The .357 magnum cases by adding an extra 1/8" Length to The existing .32 H&R Magnum round and named it The Federal .327 Magnum. This New round is a lot Hotter than the Older .32 H&R Magnum as Velocities average 1400 compared to the .32 H&R being 1000 FPS on average.

The Hunting Load I decided to use is a Carbon copy of one that was ran in an Older Shooting Times magazine. The Recipe for it was 10.2 Grains of AA-7 Powder under a 90 Grain Sierra Hollow Point Sports Master Bullet and a CCI-550 Magnum small Pistol Primer. The Load proved to be One hole Ragged results at the 20 Yard line, so that was why I chose it. The velocity was shown to be 1575 FPS out of a 6" Pressure barrel, so I saw no need to Chrono The Load prior to Hunting with it. I was very Impressed with the flat shooting and high speed velocity of this Cartridge and am doing everything I can to get the word out on Just how Potent it really is compared to The Older .32 H&R Magnum. The velocities one can achieve from this Load surpass those for the Old Classic .357 Magnum.... ;)

After I had The Hamilton Bowen Conversion done making this revolver a .327 Magnum, I had some concern of how it would shoot and group all the different rounds it used to  Fire prior to it's Modification. I Loaded up some .32 S&W Long Cartridges along with some .32 H&R Magnum Cartridges and headed for The Range. I was soon delighted to see that this revolver now appears to group far tighter shooting both of the Previous calibers on target. one reason for this is that Bowen match's the cylinder throats in his process of Modification making them all equal. That seemed to make this revolver print much tighter groups than it did when it came from the factory. It is now very versatile shooting .32 ACP, .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and the new Federal .327 Magnum Rounds...Hammerdown

Glanceblamm:  here in Tucson, Az the bobcats often use peoples rooftops to have there kittens.  They have been shown on the roof lying down watching the kits play, on the evaning news.  They also once made the news breaking into a house through a window looking for food in a kitchen. 8)

Excellent story!
Good on ya!
The photos are very good too.
Lots of good info with that last set of photos and it only leaves me with this question...
You said/wrote 32ACP among the cartridges it would shoot.
Is that a "typo"? or does someone make "moon-clips" for the 32ACP? or what? How does that work?
Regardless, the story and subsequent posts are very good.
Thanks for sharing.
