980 gr Monolithic Plastijacket Safety Slug
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:11:20 AM »
I even gave this one a name

It's just a takeoff on the Triball load but it's a slow day and I'm still mad at the doghunters from yesterday.

I wa suprised to get a three inch, 50 yard group with no load workup at all. 31 grains of Blue Dot.

The thing held together and stabilized (Nice round Hole) out of my Handi USG.

If I get time this week, I'll do some penetration tests and load workup. I'd love to get decent groups at 100 yards.

  What's it for?

Slow day mostly ...but it probably has a little more punch than Dixie's Triball Load. It uses the same charge, same buffer and same wad, just unslit. The Lyman Sabot slug should upset on impact by being rear ended by the balls.

There isn't much room for slower rifle powders in the 3" case but I'll make some up in the 3.5" handi and try some 2400. There's not even enough room in the 3.5 for a respectable load of RE17.

Should make a great deer load, maybe a little overkill.

The balls will never impact the rear of the slug unless you shoot something
ten feet or less away.

I have done something similar with 22 rimfire.  I put two round balls lead 22 caliber
with axle grease ahead of the long rifle bullet.  the axle grease to keep the balls
from rolling down the barrel.  These balls normally used in pellet guns.
Got about a 2 inch group at 15 yards.
