Quick Draw Gun Magnet

Anyone seen or used anything like this?  I was thinking this would be great to mount to the back of my night stand by by bed for keeping my 20 round XDM 9mm.  I have a 2 year old and another on the way so keeping one on my night stand is no longer possible.  My pistols are now further away from my bed than I would like and I've been trying to think of a way to change this while still keeping my son safe.  My wife doesn't want a big pistol safe on the night stand so I'm trying to accommodate.  Something like this would mount easily to the back of the night stand though and be well out of reach of my son.

Just worried about having a gun attached to a magnet for an extended period of time.  Would this magnetize my slide or any other part of the gun over time?  Just wanting to get some thoughts and see if anyone has used anything like this.

I have no personal experience with the gun magnet.  Would not work with any of my guns anyway since they are all stainless and plastic.   Eventually I suppose it could magnetize a steel slide but I doubt that would affect the function of the gun any.

All that aside I have serious reservations about leaving a loaded gun in a house with curious children.  They see more and know more than you and I are ever aware of.  Think back when you were a kid, bet you knew where your parents hid your Christmas presents and where your older brother kept his stash of Playboys.  Also, if it's not Federal law now, I know many local laws require that guns must be kept under lock and key if there are children in the home?   If your kid finds a gun and it goes bang you could be in for jail time whether anyone got hurt or not.  Check your local laws to be sure where they stand on this subject if you are set on just stashing your gun behind a night stand. 

My suggestion would be to get yourself one of those small locking metal pistol cases sized to hold only one gun that you can stash under under or in the nightstand or the bed.    I don't understand your wife's objection to a gun safe in the bedroom anyway.. how often are friends and neighbors in your bedroom to see it. I would flat out tell my wife that for the safety of the family she will have to live with some compromises.

The reason I have loaded firearms in the house is because I love my children and wife so much.  What is the point of a gun if you can't use it to defend yourself?  Have fun throwing your bullets at an intruder...I'll fire mine.  All of my firearms are kept extremely safe from my son and well out of reach.  I would never put his safety in jeapardy.

For safety, don't put the weapon there until bedtime and put it in your safe or other safe place, unloaded of course, in the morning.

XD9, I meant no offense.  I too love my family and I too keep loaded guns in the house to protect them. In fact I pretty much have a gun on me every waking hour. However they are always on my person or I am in direct line of site of where they are stashed at at all times when anyone is in the house other than myself.  As GRIMJIM suggested, when they are not in my or my wife's direct control (she's a CCW holder also) they are safely kept under lock and key.  It only takes a few moments distraction (a phone call, bathroom break, etc.) for a tragedy to occur.   How many children have drowned in a pool or bathtub because mom was gone for only a moment to answer a phone?  Same can happen with a loaded gun.

I appreciate the responses but, with all due respect, this has gotten way away from the original question that was asked.  This is not about gun safety.  I am completely safe with all of my weapons and they are never in a place where my kids or any others that may be visiting can get to them.  I'm asking about this product that I posted the link about.  Yes, I would only be putting the gun there at night after the kids are in bed but that's not the point.  Does anyone have experience with this product or anything like it?

I'm trying to decide whether to buy this product.  I'm not trying to decide what the safest way to store my guns is.

I am sure that it does what is advertised.
I would worry about the effect/affect of magatization.
There are better--or at least more simple ways to do it.
The cheap holster to the back is a method used by many over the years.
I wouldn't buy it.
But that is from a guy who keeps em loaded al over the house and even in the gun cabinet. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Okay.  Like I said I have no personal experience with this product.  Keep in mind magnets are only atracted to ferrous metals (that is metals having a high iron content).  This rules out it's use with any guns with frames made predominantly out of stainless steel, aluminum, titainium, or plastic polymers. 

For around $14 or less a cheap nylon holster screwed or velcroed to the back of the night stand would be more usefull IMO.

My kids are grown now, but when they were small I kept all guns locked up or under my control/on my person at all times. For bed time I had a holster attached to the back of the bed frame where it would only be accessible to me. When I got out of bed in the morning, the pistol went with me. I think a cheap or unused holster attached somewhere like the others suggested would be better than the magnet thing. Cheaper too. I personally would not use one as they are a gimmick that is not needed.  I use a holster attached to the back of my night stand with velcro.  I do not have any kids who are young anymore but still have two in the house and they both know how to shoot and are comfortable with guns.  I started training my kids about guns when they were around 3 years old and kept it up.  Each of my kids were given a muzzle loader and a 22 rifle.  My son has also gotten from me a 8MM mauser, 12 ga shotgun as well.  I think the worst thing a parent who shoots can try to do is not let his kids become familiar with guns.  I supervised them closely and only let them handle unloaded weapons until they demonstrated that they knew what they were doing.  Today each of them can shoot well and is a responsible gun owner.

Well I'll be.  I just assumed (should know better) that a stainless gun was non magnetic.  I tried sticking a small refrigerator magnet to the slide of my P11 and to the cylinder of my M60 and sure enough they stuck... sort of... a lite shake would jar it loose from both guns.  A question if even a very powerful magnet would have enough attraction to hold the weight of a loaded SS gun though.

A good strong magnet will pick up a SS pistol. Still not crazy about using a magnet to hold a gun anyway. I still think a holster is a better idea.
