According to the guys over at Savage Shooters it'll take a savage barrel  http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,27135.15.html  they discuss it a little, scroll down a bit they have a picture of one wearing a savage barrel.    Dave

The Marlin boys on their forum have been putting Savage barrels on the new Marlins now for some time . Guess your limited only to the action lengh and the outside measurment of the barrel so as to fit your stock.
