My "Things NOT to do again" List
« on: October 20, 2003, 04:01:31 AM »
This weekend I put my teenage Nephew into a deer stand
With a 22-250 Rifle.
My words of wisdom were "Don't Rush your shot",
"Be Patient".
Well I walked just over the hill from him to another stand
and just got comfortable.

BOOOM!

I got back up and headed back over to him. and he was already
out of the blind waiting for me. He had saw the deer walk into the
clearing, He was patient, He didn't rush, and he hit the deer right behind
the shoulder "from about five yards away with a high velocity
22-250"  YUCK !!!  Man what a terrible chore field dressing
that one was.  I have never seen that kind of damage from
a bullet. I don't think there was a single internal organ that
was still intact!!! The hide was literally loose from the meat
about a foot around the bullet hole.

Next time, he gets the ol' trusty 30-30,
not quite so explosive!!
Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit
"A wise man does not pee against the wind".

The 22-250 is around 4,000 ft per sec.  If i remember correctly??  Thats very fast and shocking too?  But funny that groundhogs still manage to get back in the hole sometimes on long shots of course.  I heard of one guy who got so mad about them getting back into the hole on him went out the next day with an '06 and just made a mess of things it was completely scattered around the hole.  It sure saved on skinn'n and gutt'en time??  Definitely coyote bait for sure.  While the 22-250  is so good at this why does the m16/.223 fail?  Maybe they should pump that baby up to a larger case and more powder and speed that round up like a 22-250 and our guys would have not only more range but better shocking/killing power too.                                    BigBill

Well at least he made a good shot and you didn't have to go looking for it??

I once took a running shot at a doe that was heading away from me.  Not a shot I'd every try again, but I did get this one from about 200yards with a 338win mag.  Hit her low, dead smack in the arse,  I never did find the bullet inside her, but never found a exit wound neither.  Well, when I gutted her, it was like a blender had mixed her insides all up.  Luckly there was snow to wash her out with, what a mess.  Sure was funny when guys at the registration station were looking for a wound, just told them I scared her!

hey summer! what kind of bullet were you useing in the 250? im surprised at this kind of expansion at such close range. but then agin im kind of a youngster{40} and have never shot a deer with a 22 cal. i have experienced some incredible kills at close range with the 243 but they were mostly shoulder shots. would be interested to know yur bullet and load?
