Red dot and H&R Shotgun
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:24:22 AM »
hi guys: reading this thread on red-dot sights and wonder how well that would work on my turkey gun
(NEF SB2-f12)? I have AMD (macular degeneration) and my right eye is all messed up, but with both eyes open my brain (what little I have) makes up for it when I look at something. I have to shoot left handed now but thats what I love about my Handi's...total ambidextrious. Would it be hard to attatch a red-dot scope on my turkey gun and how would I go about it? Which one would take the recoil?
Thanks
Tom

I'm shooting with red dots now because my right eye is messed up too.  You can keep shooting right handed with them, cause your brain automatically fixes things if you keep both eyes open.  You'll see the target with your left eye and your red dot with your right.  The brain puts it in one picture.  It works great.

I haven't had any recoil problems with them, and neither have I heard of any.  I don't know anything about mounting them on shotguns, because I always shoot them both eyes open and never thought they'd be a great advantage.  Someone here will chime in and tell you how to do it.

I just put a 2X Tru Glo red on a Tracker II 20 ga and love it whacked a doe at 70 yards Saturday morning. I also have a BSA red dot on my mossy 835 and regularly shoot 3" and 3 1/2" turkey loads never had any issues other than changing batteries. I think on a 12 ga you would have to get a steel scope rail and silver solder it. I think I remember Quick or someone saying warne makes a steel scope rail that fits handis, but you could do a search and see if you could find some more info in the forums

30-30                    223 stainless steel   20ga TDC

Warne makes two steel rails that will fit the 12ga contour, but silver soldering would be required unless you can find a gunsmith that will drill and tap it. You could probably get away with one 8-40 screw as a recoil stop and epoxy an aluminum rail on, Superweld is some pretty good stuff, specs are in the FAQs in the barrel fitting info, it has a shear strength of 2700psi.
