Daughter's first buck!
« on: November 24, 2009, 03:40:37 PM »
14 y.o. daughter has taken 3 deer so far in her hunting life, with a nice doe this youth season. She was determined to shoot a buck this year.
Opening morning was foggy, but not foggy enough. This buck came thru at about 60 yards, through the thick stuff, hit an open lane off in front of us and was quartering away. She fired when the deer was at about 70 yards (which was about as far as we could see).
One shot from her .243 (100gr Federal Power-Shoks), deer ran about 20 yards and we just heard alot of crashing. Not 100% how well it was hit and if the crashing was it running thru the thick stuff or dying in it-I was pretty sure it was a goner, but we wanted to make sure.  We waited about 30 minutes and I had her take up the blood trail.  She tracked it the short way into the thick brush and she had her first buck!
Shot clipped a bit of the liver, back of one lung, shredded the far lung and exited. We were pretty excited!
Deer had a really short, fat neck--kind of got stretched out while hanging, tho   :D  Ended up being pretty large bodied deer

Rest of season I'll be mentoring my 11 year old. She's ready to get out and hunt. We'll see how her enthusiasm holds up with the temps going down quickly   :)

Sure is nice to see young kids out there with the parents. My son got a doe in youth hunt and has a H&R superlight in .243. I was not sure about the .243 but the doe ran 50 ft and that was it. It was an older deer too and I think older deer a a lot tougher.

Very nice, indeed!  Congratulations.
