Handi barked and deer died**Updated**
« on: November 25, 2009, 09:34:33 AM »
Hello everyone,
I shot this small racked 7 pointer this morning. I would like to send out a special thanks to Lonny (Lon371) for his assistance in finding this bullet-proof deer.  He didn't want to die and ran off a ways and I couldn't find any blood to trail him.  Lonny called in his boss and his son, who were in the "neighborhood",  to help me find the deer.  They found it within 20 minutes and helped me drag it out.  We will all sleep very well this evening.  I had to hold the right antler on after he crashed and broke it off along with a small chunk of his skull.  I had to make a left-handed shot from a Handi rifle with a right-handed thumbhole stock.  Let's just say my form was not perfect, but my shot found it's mark.  My go-to round for deer hunting this year was the .45LC 225gr Barnes XPB loaded by CorBon. The rifle was sighted-in from last Spring when I last shot it and needed no adjustments this year. The shot was between 20 and 25 yds and it clocks nearly 1700fps from my rifle.  I did not have a good blood trail nor did I have a large exit hole.  I will say that the bullet penetrated well enough passing clean through the deer. I think my daughter is getting a good start to her hunting pasttime. ;)

UPDATE: Today I had a good conversation with Ty Herring from Barnes bullets. We discussed bullet performance and he opened my eyes to something that I never considered before.  Their bullets have an intended velocity range, low and high.  I have always known that their bullets, like most, have to be driven to a certain speed to start expansion, but never considered too much speed.  Their 250gr .452" XPB bullet should not be pushed much past 1500fps of velocity at whichever range impact will be made.  After 1500fps the petals could break off and be a big detriment to performance.  I guess I will have to reconsider that H Lil Gun data pushing 250gr ML bullets close to 1900fps, at least, for these bullets. IIRC, my muzzle velocity is near 1680fps so there is a good chance that the petals broke off and I didn't get the 2x expansion Barnes bullets are known for. Well.. we live and learn, good thing the deer didn't. ;)

Good hunting and Happy Holidays!!

Dinny

Dinny:

Great deer. You can't start 'em too young I say.

Do you think you could have made a different bullet choice to get a bigger exit wound and a better blood trail? Or is that the nature of the .45LC beast, or were you too close for the bullet choice?

Brian,
That shouldn't be the nature of the .45LC beast. I will try other bullets to see if the results are different.  I had high hopes for the XPBs and I shouldn't be too quick to judge based on one shot, but we'll see.

Thanks, Dinny

Looks like your daughter has hooves and antlers. You really are into deer. ;D
Great pictures. Beautiful gun. Oh and daughter and deer also. ;)
Looks like a good start to a great Thanksgiving. Glad you are home with your family. Enjoy!

Oh, Glad Lonny got to see what a deer looks like. Maybe the antler was broken from Lonny unloading his gun the other day. ;D Sorry Lonny ;) Y'all have a GREAT THANKSGIVING!

A really nice little buck!  Congrats!

When I had to track a deer on my farm, I use to just go up to the house, and get my wife's full size poodle.  I walked her (the dog) down to the place where I shot the deer, and then turned her loose.  That dog could IMMEDIATELY get on even the smallest blood trail, especially in the cold November air, and would lead us through the woods straight to the downed deer!  Once we got there, she would bark and circle, and jump on and down, but was afraid to actually touch it.  A great dog!  You might want to try it next time.  Any house dog will do.  (But, if you don't stay on your own land, you may want to keep the dog on a leash!)

That is soooo wrong MR.

Was a nice looking deer. I am curious if Dinny shot it before or after it ran into the tree and fell down? ;)

This reminded me that I posted to you a while back, but it got lost in cyber-space.  Kept forgetting to repost.   ::)  I wanted to know if you wanted to try some 250 gr. FTX's in your rifle.  They shot well in my M73 but had to be single loaded.   :(  To long to work through the action.  Should do great in the Handi.   ;D

I can't say much about the shooting (I expect a soldier to do well with a gun and all  :o ) but congratulations on the chubby baby cheeks, kiss them a lot, they go away in a year or two (so does the pot-belly and bald scalp.. they just don't keep looking like cabbage patch forever)

the costume is sooo cute!  have a great holiday (you got the food taken care of  ;D )

I think those Barnes copper bullets are too tough for pistol velocities if you want
them to deform and expand at all.     I think that is the reason he had to track
the deer.  Of course he never did tell us exactly where he shot it.

I think I am going to use a Barnes bullet but mine will be at double
his velocity.  I expect it will deform some but not explode.
