445 Mag Reamer
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:09:00 PM »
There were several that mentioned the 445 max and I guess it is the same theory
of the 357 max but I have never heard of anyone actually doing one around here.

I'd like to know the history of the MArlin 444 and why they didnt just lengthen
the 44mag instead of enlarging the cartridge

I assume the 445 mag can shoot the 44 specials and 44 mags.  Right?

If that is the main attraction, I think that since the 44 specials and 44mag ammo
is so much more plentiful and cheaper,   I think the 445 mag would be a much
better idea than the 454 /460 reamed from 45 colt.  Besides, didnt I see that
the 45 colt was discontinued ?

The 45 Colt Carbine is still a current product, accessory barrels are just out of stock just like several others aren't available.

The 445 supermag is basicly a MAX version of the 44mag..

The 445 shouldnt have any issues firing 44 spcl or mag but couldnt say from first hand , what the accuracy would be like .

The 444 Marlin is a super-charged nitrous breathing version of a 44mag , the case is a inch longer then the 44 mags case...

I would think the main attraction of the 445 is ; Something no one else or very few have ; Wanting more power then the 44 mag can offer ... I have myself never found the 44 mag wanting for power. Thats just me thou.

I think the comparison of the 44 spcl./mag/supermag Versus the 45lc/454/460S&W    is just a little off balance ... The 45 lc can be hand loaded to achieve everything the 44 mag can yet with a bigger diameter bullet.. The 454 Casull is the superior of the 445 supermag in every way that i can see in my loading data , Thou i think it would be a prefference call since the 445 keeps close to the pace .. And the 460 ? With a 395gr bullet the 460 can keep a damn close 2nd to a 45-70 shooting 400gr bullets at lever action levels ...

I would certainly think the 45lc/454/460mag to be the most versitile from cowboy loads to moose slayer ..   Just my 2 cent thou ;)

from the results i have with handloads of 1330-2240 fps the .460
is beginning to come alive in my handi. used some cast boolits for the slow stuff that worked
very good in accuracy. and sjhp for the faster loads with great accuracy...

soon it should come together behind my 45/70,
the .460 will have a hard time try'n to beat the multifunction 70.

compare ballistics between the supermag and the .460.....
that would be my answer

The 445 was very popular about 3 yrs ago around here.I was the first to do one as I recall and alot of guy's said it would'nt work as well as it did. After I chrono'ed my loads and they came to within 125 fps. of the 444 and shot better than the 44 mag did. 10 or 12 guy's reamed there's also, and the accurcy improved with the oversized bore's(.432) The 265 gr. hornady bullets were hitting 2265 fps with a near max load of 296,and the 300gr. XTP's were doing 1975 fps. They were doing this in everyone's 445 and was the best big caliber I ever used on hogs and deer. The 44 mag's shot as well as before also. All this came from 31 to 32 grs. of 296,which is alot less than the 45 70 use's to get that velocity, with about 75%of the recoil of the 45 70. Its a good caliber and it would really be something if the leverguns were to be chambered for it.( wake up Marlin) Start a kid out hunting with the 44 spl. or 44 mag,and then on to the 445.   Something to think about  ;D ;D ;D   Digger

Apparently, the limitation for hot 45LC loads is the strength of case.  So if you want something significantly harder hitting but still a powder miser compared to 45/70,  you really need to go the 454/460 route.

compared to 35gr in my .460.. 250gr sjhp @1920fps
same powder
not much in powder mise'n.. but a different world of ballistics
they both cud be hotter but i like them this way ;D
no need to due any more speed. thats my onion..... ;)

Tim,

Is that out of a BC or one of the 22-inch barrels?

24" SS Ultra Hunter, I get 2425fps with a bit more H4198 behind a 300gr Nosler Partition in a 22" barrel.  ;)

That ultra is a handsome gun.  Might just have to get one.  Runs about 8 pounds, if I recall, sans scope.
