New Dom Carpenter Parrot and a 1/2

Tuesday afternoon a UPS truck pulled up at the bottom of the driveway. He had 4 boxes for me that weighed just under 200 lbs. He appreciated me using my handtruck to help him take the boxes up to the house. 45 minutes later the contents of those boxes were put together.

Part 1 - This is a Carpenter GB Parrot with sights and .22 firing system.

Part 2 - This is one of Dom's Sawyer barrels in 1 inch bore. It is interchangeable with the carriage and uses both the rear sight and the .22 firing system. The front sight is shorter. This cannon replaces the 1/3 scale Napoleon in 1 inch that I was shooting. I didn't want to get rid of all of the tools and balls that I already had, so I had Dom build this for me.

Dom is the man.

     Ex 49'er,   That sure is a nice looking cannon you have there!  We like that fact that it is has a 1" bore, Tube.  Probably will be a higher velocity field gun than the GB size guns.  Those are great photos you have there, but it's a little hard to see if you have lead or zinc cast cannon balls.  Which are they and could you post a photo of the mold you use?  Thanks, and have fun shooting your new cannon!!

The balls are 3 ounce lead and the mold is one of the 4in1 molds from Hilts made for casting fishing weights. I got it at a local sporting goods store.
The balls for the GB bore are also lead and are from both a Hilts mold and a Do-it Mold.

The 1" barrel is a one caliber thick barrel.  It's 24" long so it would be interesting to see how accurate it is.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Actually the tompions were made for my old 1/3 scale napoleon and are both 1 inch. When I get rid of that cannon I'll keep the brass one for this barrel. I've got the tompion fleshed out for the GB bore; but, haven't put it together, yet.

The sights were ordered at the same time as the barrel, a half size Parrott, with the front sight on the trunnion.  After a lot of thought, I think that the lanyard system is the way to go and will ask Dominick to add that as well.  The burning question at the moment involves muzzle swell or not.

Well , little seacoast , That depends entierly on which model you wish to own .

I like muzzle swells personally ,that is why I went CSA . There was a year or two in the early 1859-61 IIRC when union guns 10 lbers had a small flair .

What type of Parrott do you want ? other than muzzle swell ?

Hi Gary, Do you have pics illustrating the dfferent types of Parrott?  Mind you, I have't discussed this with the builder and he may be unwilling to change his very nice design.

Something to keep in  mind with a lanyard, unless your gun is very heavy, if it sits on wheels the barrel may move when you pull the lanyard.  if you are going to shoot a tarets you need an alternative firing method, such as quills.

 That's a very practical setup. I like the idea of multiple barrels on the same mount. Add a stubby mountain howitzer style barrel in soda can bore and you'll be ready for anything :)

 You'll be able to get a 1" lead ball to good velocity out of that length/weight of barrel without a ton of recoil. A steel ball would really be smokin' fast.

I'll try to accomodate you with video; but be forewarned, I'm having trouble enough just trying to figure out how to use "My Hosted Pics" let alone video. YouTube is something else again. Don't know when I'll go to the range and fire the beast, either. I'll keep you in mind, tho.

Mountain Howitser, eh. Hmmmm. Will have to look at finances after the first of the year.
