No deer today but saw a small spike on the opener,and a 4 or a 6 sunday morning

No deer even seen, but several piles of droppings. The only thing that I did was to somehow lose my Nikon Prostaff binoculars! Went back twice and cannot find them.

I didn't see any deer until after legal shooting hours, and the buck didn't even meet the 3 point minimum for WMU 3J. Property owner has seen only one legal buck so far (6 pt). But I did shoot a bear on the 24th!

Thanks to Saturday opener rather than earlier Monday, rut was practically over before it started. One more reason for me to HATE saturday opener.

The Saturday open is earlier than the older opening.

Took a goob sized doe on the morning of the opener. The only buck I have seen was tuesday night crossing the road in front of me, couldn't count points but did see nice tall tines

I didn't see anything on opening morning.Went back to the same stand on Sunday and took this 4 pt at 8 am,using a H&R 20ga.

Guys what area are you hunting i mostly hunt 9r and 9m. I think our Dec. is full of you know what S--t on the amount of deer we have. Rich

RWK we hunt 7R been seeing deer every day just haven't been able to connect again since opening day. we also have a camp up in 6N my son and I both connected on buck up there with rifles.

3C- nothin for a while. Went out still hunting high up in the laurel during the wind storm yesterday as they can't see or smell with all the laurel and wind movement. Came upon a literal deer carnival at around 2pm. they were chasing and bleating, at least 7 deer altogether coming and going in one big patch of laurel above a clearing. The biggest took off after two does but couldn't get a shot, then a spike came running and then this guy brought up the rear chasing another two does who seemed to want to get caught as they stayed in the patch and didn't run off like the other two. He was the only one to spot me but not fast enough. Other then this one show its been pretty slow and I have really had to climb to find their rubs and scrapes this year. It was an experience to see them behaving that way even if I hadn't got on. Good luck to all.

I was in Otsego (4F) for opening day and it was pretty slow there. Also hunt Dutchess County where there are a fair number of deer. Passed on a spike Wednesday and took a doe Friday after Thanksgiving, but other than that have seen only a handful of deer.

My group and I hunt units in area 4. Opening day wasn't bad. I took a 6 pntr with a small rack and big body, my brother connected (lightly I think) but did not collect a really big guy, one of my buddies has been taking coyotes regulary and one on opening day- now call him Freddy 3 Dogs.

But, I guess I have a 'spoiler' nearby. Every day we have been out someone nearby, or so it sounds, rips off 3 rounds faster than anyone could even take aim. It seems to happen after one of our shots, and it seems to come from directly behind us. When I go to check there is, of course, nobody there although I have seen bootprints that do not belong to anyone in our group in places where they should not be.

Hmmm, think it's time to try for a mid-day hunt..............

My former son in law was suppose to have killed a 23 point 327 pound buck opening morning. My grandson showed me a picture of it he had on his cell phone. Lousy picture and i couldn't count the points on it. It did have a big rack. If it weighed 327 pounds i will eat it horns, hide, hooves, and all.

I seen a few deer on Monday 7M area passed a few small bucks :My sons took a large 2 year old doe about 165 on the hoof and my other son missed 4 pointer but took a nice eating button buck.
I can say out of 8 guys we all seen deer that morning ans a few does on Sunday but it was over the Monday no hunters no one pushing the deer.The weather did play a fact it was warm and they don't have to move until dark.I was up last Sat: a waste of time 3 guys covered 3,500 aces of game lands no other guys hunting.The hunting is a dying sport I am going to Waite until the late season M/L maybe the temp: will drop get some snow on the ground and may get them to feed during daylight hours otherwise it just waisting your time not enough hunter in the woods after opening day.

Woodsdweller: Congradulations to your daughter, you must be a proud Papa!

I think the weather has played a significant role this year. The seasonal change has been slow in coming and has been gradual, not like the previous 3 or 4 years when it seemed to just change in a day or so, and with some colder nights the Whitetail have grown their winter coats which means that on the warmer sunny days they just lay low to avoid overheating. The deer are out there and with this weekend and the weather in general turning colder (just had some snow flurries), I think we should see the deer moving. The rut still on and more doe are coming into estrus, so I think things may get interesting for the last 3 weeks.

Opening day was not what I expected this year. I have hunted whitetails for almost 50 years and by far this opener was one of the worst. It seems to me that the number of people hunting is on the decline in NYS. One of the guys I hunt with dropped a nice 8 point at 10 am that morning and that has been the only deer taken off that land so far this year. Normally we get a lot of out of state hunters and down state folks and there seemed to be a lack of them this year. I don't know, maybe it's the increase in licence fees this year or maybe people are loosing interest in hunting.

I had a small buck & a doe down by 8:05 on the first day. It was really slow IMO however as only about 10 shots heard all day & these where 2 of the 3 deer we saw all day. I can remember as a teenager stopping counting at 100 shots opening morning. i think the hay day of Ny deer seasons is past & mostly to blame is the state for various reasons that would require a small book to be written by me if I got started. Old Grizz, i agree with you that this was one of the worst years that i've hunted. This was my 50th year, i've talk with a lot of folks and they agree ,this year sucked!!!!!. After 50 years i've learned one thing there are to many people sitting in trees and not pushing the deer around, like when i first started, and no more young bloods, to hunt with dad or grampa.

I am not sure where you guys are huntin. I'm in northern Duchess. I filled all my tags this year. I saw more bucks than i nthe last 3 years combined. No monsters, but a lot of shooter bucks for sure. lots of small bucks.I have seen somethin like 15 bucks since Oct bow season. This is all on 2 small pieces of property.

I have seen very few does during legal light, but I see a lot at night around the property. This is the opposite of every year I have been huntin this area.

Westchester on the contrary was dead. We saw a lot on the camera late Sept, then dryed up by the opener.

[b Heck during bow season I had 18 doe and 6 different buck in front of me just too far out for a bow. I hunt where I live and see deer every day of the week all year round. I was out this morning and saw 5 doe but far away for a 30-30 but again I heard zero shots this morning. This isn't what most of us in this area are used to. However, I'm glad you filled your tags because you are one of the few I have talked to that has been that lucky this year. Muzzeloader is next so we'll see what happens.

Got back to the house yesterday morning From sitting in a hedge row it was about 8:30 let the dog out and she started barking. I looked down in the swamp and there stood a doe. one more doe tag filled!

I have been waiting all season for what I call my "property doe". It is usually while I'm getting fire wood or snow plowing. One will linger long enough for me to get my gun and drop it. I even got one last year while in my kitchen over a cup of coffee. She walked up the side of the property and stopped 50 yards off the side of the house. I snuck out and belly crawled up my hill and waited for her to feed on through. She looked real suprised to see me just befor I pulled the trigger. Almost like she said "holy SH*?"

I have had one every year for the last 6 years, except this year.

Before the season started I saw bucks up the kazuu. One afternoon I had 5 in one hay field. Then the season started and for the first 6 days I saw nothing, not even a doe. On day 7 I went in to get some lunch at about 11:30 and decided to watch the news before I went back out. Well I promptly fell asleep and woke up at 2:30 I jumped up from the chair and put on my coat, as I was doing that I looked out the sliding glass doors that go to my deck and there not 50 yards away at my pond stand 2 doe.

I went out the front door and around the side of the house and both were still standing there. Got one for the freezer, but had to put it in the bucket on the tractor to take it out back a few hundred yards to dress it since I didn't want the pile that close to the house.
