.50 cal CVA Bobcat
« on: November 26, 2009, 07:15:41 AM »
I have a .50 cal CVA Bobcat percussion rifle. I like it because it is light. I have only shot it a few times. I have shot three shot groups at 50 yards with 80-100 grains of Pyrodex RS with alright results. It would be better with a better trigger. Mine has one that is between 5lbs and 50lbs. Is there anyone that makes good triggers for these rifles? Also if anyone else has one of these what loads do you shoot out of them so I can try them in mine, thanks, o-ya, I use a musket cap in mine. Never even tried the standard caps with this gun.
thanks

Chris, take a look at this thread for ideas to lighten up that trigger: http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,186795.0.html

I have one of these, but I replaced the synthetic stock with a wood one and changed the sights. Although I haven't taken the time to work up a load, it shot real good using 75 grains of P-RS and TC Cheap Shot sabots.

.490 round ball  .015 patch and 70gr RS. conicals ( powerbelts) also shoot excellent out of the rifle.

My son has one of these and he was shooting a light load of 50 gr FFG and a PRB.  Don't recall the accuracy though.

80 grains of Hodgdon Triple 7. 245 gr Powerbelt Bullets.  I also chaged the sites and mounted T/C White Mountain Fiber Optic Sites.  This will unlock the true potential of this wonderful little muzzle loader.  I had to slightly file the dove tail on the front sight to get it to fit.

This is a very accurate load. My daughters can hit a paper plate every time at 100 yards.  Their shot group is typically 5".

I had a hard time getting 777 to fire unless I crushed some powder and put it in the bolster.

I bought a Bobcat a few years ago from Wmart for $54. It certainly is a shooter. I've had success with the Hornady 385 gr. Great Plains bullet over 90 gr. of 2FF. It is like shooting a .50-90. Also, .490 roundballs over 70 gr. 2 FF group well.

Bought mine at Wally World for $55 about 4 or 5 years ago. Mine shoots best with 60 grains of FFG and Powerbelts. This load is accurate and light recoiling. I have bumped it up in increments to 100 grains of FFG but accuracy wasn't as good. I'd like to find a wood stock for mine.
All in all for $55 you can't beat it. ;D

That's an indication the fire channel is a dirty. It could be that a little oil from storage or even some of the packing grease from the gun being new was left in the bolster area or the bottom of the barrel when it's been fired. If that happens the powder residue and heat mixed with the petroleum product will turn into a really hard gunk almost like tar.
Every thing needs to be clean and dry,
Those CVA and Traditions breechplug/drum bolsters are a darn magnet for gunk! Ya really gotta get in there with pipe cleaners an q-tips and anything else you can think of to clean that out, brakecleaner spray, then soapy water with the barrel submerged in the solution and a pump action. I've even gone as far as putting the bottom of the barrel in a tincan of gas and pumping the stuff in/out of the bolster to clean it.

Ya gotta clean them things till a white cleaning patch comes out white

Mine shoots great with 60 grains of either Clear shot or 777  and a LEE modern minie. Never had an issue with it not firing.
