Ejector or extractor?
« on: November 26, 2009, 10:45:44 AM »
My ultra varmint has a extractor, if I'm looking at it right. When I open the action, the extractor opens and I have to pull the brass out. I would like it to be an ejector due to a quicker second shot. I could make sure I don't miss but that is unlikely as times ;D. Is it possible to make it a ejector. I noticed in the stickies there was a fix the other way so these guns must have had ejectors at some time. Don

H&R switched to extractors on all centerfire rifle barrels a few years ago, an extractor can be converted to an ejector, but the underlug must be machined to accept the parts which can be bought from Brownell's or Numrich,  I've done conversions both ways, but prefer kind of a mix of the two, all of which are covered in the FAQs, I've never been concerned about that quick of a follow up shot, even an extractor can be reloaded much faster than a muzzleloader, and millions of TC Contender and Encore owners are perfectly happy with extractors only. H&R just spoiled us with the ejectors, but the first time a case sticks in the chamber, you'll likely wish it was an extractor which are much more dependable. ;)

I like the ejector on a shotgun, but HATE them on my handi rifles. I would MUCH prefer all extractors and converted most of mine.

A quick second shot and a SS rifle seems an oxy-moron to me. Just consentrate on making the first shot count and pic a different rifle for charging rhinos. LOL

Thanks to Tim, and my friend Lyle Mcgregor of Dick williams Gun Shop, Saginaw, MI, all my Handis are extractor.  The Pardners, Toppers and Sportsters are ejectors.  They're fine in rimfires and shotguns, but unpredictable in centerfires.  I don't trust them, and don't enjoy digging around in snow and weeds to find brass.  I can reload almost as fast as a bolt gun.  If you figure the amount of time it takes to reload a magazine, I'm light years ahead.  I've never, in more than 50 years of hunting, needed a second shot faster than I can do it with an extractor.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize the extractor was more reliable that the ejector, very good info. Unlike some, I've had to take a fast second shot. I killed two deer with my encore last year in about 20 seconds so a second shot is needed sometimes. We can kill 2 a day where i live. I guess I should get a simi auto or better yet an AR ;D. Don

Extractors are the most dependable..but..I've only had a couple of FTE before, way too hot of handloads..and a slightly out of round chamber..Most of the time..you can do a little chamber polishing and Quicks BB trick under the spring and it will eliminate this worry, other times you can't..Thanks to the instructions in the FAQ's..this can be fixed..for those who want extractors...Me..I like the ejectors..and don't have any issues with them..but..the extractors are pretty good to..It's just a matter of what you want and are used to..Good luck on the conversion..

2 deer a DAY??? In Maine where I hunt we can shoot 1 deer a year, IF we are lucky enough to see one. With an estimated 40% loss of the deer herd over the last 2 years of very hard winters, the worst in years (global warming you know), most hunters in the northern half of Maine are not even seeing any deer. The only one I saw in a week was dead in the high speed lane of Rt 95 in Massachusetts on the way home from a week and a half at camp...2 deer a DAY!!!...WOW!!!!....<><....:)

Yes, if you can afford it, 2 deer a day. After killing 3 bucks and 3 does, you can buy bonus tags. Use to be 2 does on each tag for 18.00. Now you get 6 does on each tag for 18.00. Kill 2 deer each day fron first Saturday to first Saturday in January. That would be bow for a month , muzzleloader for 2 weeks, rifle where I live, 7 weeks. Insurance companies would like you to kill more and pretty much control the game dept here. Don

Yes, extractor's are way better then ejection in my humble opinion. On both of my Handi's I filed whatever I had to file down so it extracts only. Can't remember the name of the piece you have to file?? I had cases sticking on me in the ejector mode!! I think you can find how to do this mod in the FAQ??

Conversion of an ejector to an extractor by removing the step from the ejector doesn't help to avoid sticking brass, it just prevents it from throwing the brass over your shoulder.  ;) A factory extractor mechanically lifts the case out of the chamber, with force if needed, something the spring in an ejector can't do.  :-\

Quick:
Your right. That conversion DOESN'T prevent sticking cases. Just keeps you from looking for them in the weeds!! In one of the loops on my shell holder I carry a 4-5 inch piece of round bar stock to drop down the bbl to knock out a stuck case. Have had to use it a few times. It is brass!! I guess copper would work too.

There's also Fred M's simple ejector notch method too(FAQs),  a pocket knife tip can be used to help the case out of the chamber.  ;)

I prefer an extractor on any single-shot deer/varmint rifle like a Handi or a TC. I also prefer extractors on single/double barrel shotguns. I do not like to lose empties in the field and I will not leave them out of respect for the landowner. When an ejector? Well, if I were to ever buy a double rifle for dangerous game, then, of course, I would want ejectors on that. Ejectors are definitely faster (for me anyway) and facing something truly dangerous with extractors is not a gamble I want to take.

Not very many years ago we were only allowed 1 deer a year and it had to be antlered. I remember one year we were allowed two deer, both could be bucks, or a buck and a doe, then we had about a ten year stretch that was unlimited does per season, but only one buck, now it is 4 deer maxium, only one can be a buck. Our deer population has fallen way off drastically, with also help from disease and a huge increase in coyote population.

Have never had a stuck case.  Guess I am waiting for the next Grizzly charge to have one.  Anyway the only things I own are ejectors.  Since H&R went to extractors I have started buying T/Cs again.

Rog, if TC extractors work for ya, what's wrong with an H&R extractor?  ??? I see no logic in that.  ::)

I don't have a problem with the current extraction method, as is but just wish the cases stuck out just a tad bit more for better extraction with your fingers.  BUT as I showed my uncle, I can extract and reload faster than I can renock an arrow on my bow so its very livable to me, and is alot better than loosing brass in the field when hunting.

Tim, I moved away from T/Cs when I found H&Rs had ejectors.  I like my T/Cs, it's just I liked the ejectors better.  Now that H&R no longer makes them with ejectors I am moving back to T/C.

You can have your cake and eat it too, just convert the extractors to ejectors, it's not all that hard and would cost a lot less than an Encore even if you had a gunsmith do the work.  ;)

Time to go back to the FAQ's and look that one up.  I got way more extractors than ejectors and find I like the ejectors better for hunting.  Cold fingers just don't grab the cases very easy when they don't come out very far.  I'm with Sourdough on this one, for hunting I want the brass to get out of the way if I need to do a followup shot.  I have only had one barrel not kick the brass out and that was a 243 that would stick after getting warm from 4-5 shots at the range.  Cool it off,  open the action and she would fling em out.  For just plinkin, extractor is fine.  DP

Tim, I hope I'm not breaching privacy with this.  My .445 extracts almost twice as far as the production .44 Mag.  If it is in the FAQs, I haven't seen it.  Would you mind posting how it is done.

It's in the FAQs, see EJECTOR TO FACTORY EXTRACTOR CONVERSION, it's an edit at the bottom of the Extractor to Ejector conversion, I use the factory extractor cam(I make my own now) and the original ejector claw with a short spring between the cam and ejector, that allows it to push the case out further than a standard extractor, it also extracts with the force of the the factory extractor, if it sticks tho, when the spring fully compresses it ejects!! The mix of the two pushes the case out about twice as far as a factory extractor.

Ouch, in my county in Indiana, we can take one antlered deer and up to 8 anterless. First anterless bonus permit costs $24 and each additional one is $15. Plenty of land for sale around here and not as cold as Maine. (Oh, and by the way, we have no daily limit. guess you could get all nine in one day. I have taken as many as three personally.
