.30 herrett.. worth the trouble?
« on: November 26, 2009, 02:57:43 PM »
Hi all, new to the forum and would like some advice from those who've been there... I'm considering trading my .44 mag barrel for a .30 herrett from another forum member... is it worth all the trouble forming brass and such??  I am looking a consolidating calibers to reload...I already load 30-30.  It seems like a tried and true deer slayer, which is what i'll be using it for, also seems like it'd be fairly cheap to reload.  Also what is recoil from a .30 herrett with a 10" barrel compared to the .44? Thanks in advance!

Since the recoil from a 357 Herrett is less than a 44 Mag., a 30 Herrett would have to have even less recoil.

Is the 30 Herrett worth it?  I don't think so unless you're a masochist.  Why go to the trouble of making brass when the plain old 30/30 would work just as well?

I think the best argument for the herret is that it produces more velocity in a 10 inch barrel than the 30-30... somebody correct me if I'm wrong  ;D

I've had my 10" .30 Herrett barrel since 1976 and love it.  I had a Super 14 barrel for a decade as a silhouette tube but finally sold it; I'll not sell the 10".  You'll find that the .30-30 is pretty inefficient in a 10" barrel, more blast, more recoil, no more velocity, less accuracy.  In a 14" barrel the .30-30 is superior, but in a 10" I'll take the Herrett any day.  In equal weight pistols the Herrett is considerably more pleasant to shoot than full-house .44 Magnum loads IME.

Between the .44 and the .30 Herrett, I'd choose the Herrett for most of my hunting.   It shoots much flatter, uses 110-grain varmint loads, or 125/150 BTips for game.  Plus you can buy formed brass here: http://www.eabco.com/brass01.html   Unless you're a wildcatter and love case forming, buy it already formed.  Thank me later.   ;)

You are correct, espically with the lighter weight 110-130 gn bullets, BUT with proper hand loads the gap isn't that great and with the 150 -170 the gap isn't that great.
LoneStar, makes a good point about being able to buy 30 Herrett brass,  IF you deside to go the Herrett route, REMEMBER, this round head spaces on the shoulder and  in resizing  it is very important NOT to set the shoulder back.

Hey there:

Get you a 30 Herrett. Making brass is no big thing. Easy to do, just take some time, and make a big batch. You don't even need forming dies. Now, it's much easier than years ago when I got mine. Now, instead of using a hacksaw, I use the good ole Dremel and/or my Sawsall battery powered. Matter of fact, it's a good therapy making the cases. Make sure you do everything right after you cut off the excess 30-30 casings.

By that, I mean, size cases to get them in gun, and after that, just necksize. This is really my favorite deer gun. It'll kill em just as dead as a 460 Weatherby Mag. I've never had one to run after shooting him, well, maybe a yard or two. Most dropped in their tracks. Now, I'm not a cowboy shooter, I pick my shots, and am committed to being a humane hunter.

I love this cartridge, matter of fact I'm loading a bunch up now, because another thing I'm all for, is practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more. You'll get to a point, when you put the crosshairs on a deer, you know you've got him. Confidence is something you cannot buy, you have to practice, practice, practice.

I agree practice and confidence are the two most important aspects of pistol hunting. With todays excellent bullets and powerful calibers sometimes we get to worried about the right choice. I had much rather see a hunter with one common barrel he can shoot well than all the custom barrels in the world. I shot a 30 Herrett in the 70's and was always pleased with the results. It was developed for the 10 inch bbarrel and would be my choice hands down if I wanted a 30 caliber 10 inch Contender today. JMHO

Safe shooting
Doug
Life is short but remember, we are only practicing for something better!!
