my recomendation if you want a good big bore is just buy a fa 500we. You could have one in a couple weeks. If you go the custom route id recomend you stick with linebaugh or bowen as there about the only ones thats guns hold any kind of resale value. Also unless you absoultely know that you will never part with it no matter how tough things will get stay away from custom touches like engraving and putting your name on the gun as it makes it even harder to get any money out of them if you sell them down the line. I dont believe your going to get into a reader for a grand. Just the gun to convert is going to run you at least 400 used. I know you wont get into a bowen or linebaugh for that but if you go linebaugh you will have a year or two to save the rest of the money.

LLoyd....I cannot buy a FA in MASS.  They are not legal for sale unless they were purchased before October 1998.

Well I sure like my Kimbers and have really had fun owning them over the past years, taking them to the range etc. I have all the big bore rifles I really need from a .375-Wby to a .475 mag shooting a 600 grn pill.
I just can't imagine owning more pistol for hunting than my .460 Smith & Wesson, don't think I could handle anymore recoil. I would like to own a lever gun John Wayne model with octagon barrel!!!

However, I once saw an model 1911 many years ago, all ingraved and trimmed in gold, laid out in a walnut box! It was some sort of commemorative piece I guess, I have not seen any since, don't know must have been a special run I suppose but that pistol was a work of art and I would liked to have one just like it for myself.

Someone said there is a Desert Eagle that is done the same way, I don't know and have never seen it either but it would be something different to have in the collection. I just always felt the model 1911 was more associated with our country's history. :-\   :-\    :-\

Doug, do some shopping for a new hoggetter. I know there are lots of gunshops in your area. You can find something your interested in? If not, save the money for when you do? But, have fun doing the looking thing. a few hundred more and you could have a new custom JR 500? Then you and your buddy who came up to Vermont with you could get into a peeing contest to see who gets the biggest caliber pistol(how's he doing any how? Don't know his username for this forum? Memory is as short as other parts of my anatomy).

Well I know what I would do. I would go with the Reeder 510 GNR Hunter. I have one in a 6 inch and I love it. I prefer the round barrel to the octagon.

If someone told me I could only have one handgun, my 510 GNR Hunter would be the one I would keep.

Under the topic "hunting with  38 Super", a poster  posted a really fine Bisley.  A 32 mag that was converted to a five shot 38 Super.  This arangement lets you shoot max 38 super or 9X23 safely and rivals the 357 without the blast and kick.  That would be what I would get hands down. ;D

Thanks for the replies gents!!

S.B.  The fellow that we went to VT with is Dave and goes by Grizz666..nicer guy you couldn't find!!!  May do a VT trip in March or April for sheep or ibex, we'll see and will keep you posted.  Short memory, short????  Steeevvveee...... :D

Lloyd...around 2000 there was a law passed that was held up in court since 1998 that states that the state police and the AG have to independently safety test and certify handguns that meet certain criteria such as a non-removable serial number, a certain accuracy level, etc.  SW, Beretta, SIG, Ruger and a few others have submitted their guns for testing.  Though not all models.  FA, Kimber, Colt, and a bunch of others refuse and we're out of luck in the handgun department.  IF someone has a say a FA and it was purchased before 1998 and wants to sell it...the prices are astronomical!!!!

Browning pistols are not listed, a used HP in crummy condition is a $900-$1000 proposition.  For get a Colt 1911.  I'm ashamed to say but 6 years ago I bought a never fired LW Commander, series 70 for $1,100.  Then SW came out with their 1911s...timing is everything though I'd prefer a colt.  There's a plain jane series 70 1911 on consignment at my shop...asking price is $1,100. I recently was interested in a BH in .357.  Ruger now produces the Xframe with the internal lock device...not yet tested, not permitted for sale even though it technically has more safety features than the previous model.

Heres the linfo from my shop if you are interested:  http://www.fsguns.com/fsg_information.html

Redhawk...I'm with you on the round barrel config on the 510.  Would really like a stainless gun, but the frame that I can get to work with is blue.  Wonder if Reeder can hard chrome?????

To each his own--I like to Octogon.
If reeder doesn't hardchrome he knows who does.
I also like the 510---just looks like a gun.
What about the carving thingy?
let's do the engraving.----PLEEEEESE!
Blessings :D

drdougrx, check out Reeder's two tone guns. My 510 GNR has a Black Chromex finish frame and barrel, the hammer and cylinder is Vapor honed stainless and the trigger is stainless with stainless cylinder pin and the pins are all stainless. Looks sharp. I can send you pic's if you want to look at it. It also has the Mongolian stag grips which makes the gun look great.

I actually like it better than I do my all Stainless 475 Linebaugh he did. I am just talking about the looks.  I have black Macarta grips on the 475 Linebaugh.

My new one getting done right now is a all stainless 45 Colt with Mongolian stag grips.

All have 6 inch barrels.

I would imagine the only way to get a reader gun would be to buy a ruger and send it to him. Im sure his guns arent tested either.

Lloyd, Gary Reeder also sells some guns that he has in stock, so he does builds for his stock list. What do you mean his guns are not tested?  Gary test fires and checks for accuracy with every gun he ships out.

I hate to say it but Dr D and I are both from the Bay State. The Freedom Arms is not legally available to us. I voted for the Reeder 510. Personally I would get one with a 6 1/2 barrel and the hi viz front sight.

OK, I see what your talking about.  The thing about a lot of Reeders guns is, they are built on Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk and Redhawk frames, and they are approved in his State. Also if you send you approved gun to Gary Reeder is is still a legal gun when it comes back and is not subject to the test law.

Right you are Redhawk...as I said before...Grizz666 is a friend of mine and he has a SBH frame that was his late fathers, a project gun that was never complete.  If he'll still sell it to me, I'll pay him a fair price which is much less than the cost of a used gun, even a beater.

Red...lov to see some pics!  Will you post them?
