What would you do???
« on: November 27, 2009, 07:04:38 AM »
Hi All,

Bored day after Thanksgiving!!  Hope yours was calorically devestating!!

I have a hankering for a new something or other.

1.  I'm going to purchase a SBH frame from Grizz666 to eventually build into a Gary Reeder Hunter in 510GNR with a 5" barrel   http://www.reedercustomguns.com/revolvers/510gnr.htm

2.  I have a Blackhawk in .41 mag that would be cool as a Mag-Na-Port Predator conversion, but leaving the barrel length at 6.5"   http://www.magnaport.com/conv.html

3.  Maybe a new SW 1911    http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=14720&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y

4.  Or maybe a SW1911 Sub Compact Pro
   http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=86961&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y

5.  Or.. a stainles Walther PPK/S with a ramp/throat/polish and trigger job.
     http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=13152&storeId=10002&productId=58946&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=43802&isFirearm=Y

Since I don't have $1,000 right at this moment and would like to do something early next year...it's kinda fun to day dream.  I have a few full and commander sized 1911s and a PPKs.  I had a SBH Mag-Na-Port Predator in 44mag and sold it and am interested in replacing it and the Reeder Custom....well  seems to be something I'd like to own and shoot.

Results will appear after you vote!!!

Thanks!!

6. None of the above. Sorry can't help chose one of those options as I'd not spend my money on either.

I might put some more with it and buy a Browning Citori White Lightning .410 O/U, or even a Freedom Arms Model 97 .44 Special or maybe a Cooper Arms 6MM Remington or .22-250 rifle but I'd not do any of the things you list.

Heres something to ponder...Centerfire System has a AR 15 lower reciever for $80. including shipping. You'ld have to pay your FFL transfer fee. A heck of a price. In time you could build an AR 15 to your preference.

Sorry 45-70...can't buy a FA in MA...unless i want to pay a couple thousand for one used (pre-1998 purchase....no NEW FA's are permitted).  I was thinking about the 454 though in a custom 5 shot rather than the GNR.....

Rogertc1...great suggestion....but...I have a DPMS stripped lower sitting in my safe....I already have 2 tricked out ARs...can't decide what I want to do with it just yet.

Such problems.......... ;)

What would I do if I had $1000 to spend on a new gun???

Easy, I'd put a little more with it, (Well, actialy a lot more), and get a New Colt SAA, 4&3/4 in, .45 Colt caliber, all blued Black Powder frame, and have Paul Persenger put a set of one piece real Ivory grips on it.

Then, I'd have three of them.

LOL!!!!!!!!

Doug-

I voted #1, since it seems like thats what you really want, and I like big bore revolvers.  My personal choice would be none of the above, as I have it pretty well covered already.  Ifg you look at the compact .45 auto, you might want to consider the Kimber ultra carry version.  Mine has been 100% reliable, and shoots almost as accurate as my full size Kimber target / Gold Cups.

Me, I just blew $ on a Ithaca O/U shotgun.  Nice engraving and balance, great shape, and most of all, very pretty walnut...(I'm a sucker for good wood)  By the way, deer season opens in about 6 hours, and I cant sleep, so I am up writing this..... :)  Everyone else in the cabin is snoring..lol

You are all over the map.
Carry to hunting.
I would vote for the one you have need for.
If you need another hunting handgun, go that way.
If you need a small auto for a local IDPA match get that.
If you need a target 45 or a steel gun.....
Now I think you are a little light with the $1,000 for any of the guns.
While the shooting Iron may cost about a K out the door you need to add:
Leather holster.  $75- 150
Mags, moon clips, or speed loades another $100
Holders for them
Ammo (sight in)

If you don't have a hole then Spend the $1K on a hunt and use one of the hunting handguns.
Other option is a good 22LR target gun.  High Standard Victor?   Browning Buck Mark Target?

Bigeasy...been up a few night before a hunt myself!!  Good luck and be safe...I can't get the Kimber as it is not allowed to be sold in MA.  So..SW or ...nothing.  I'm also looking at a Cesare Gaurini O/U with engraving and incredible wood..though I have an Uncle that is thinking of parting with his Beretta 686 LLEE with an extra set of 20g barrels....I may hold out for that as the price will be "family discount"!!!

McWood...course I'm all over the place...fact is...I don't "need" any of them.  I have several carry, hunting and target guns.  I've had a High Standard Victor since the early 1980's (CT Mfr).  Several custom 45's and HPs and walthers...always room for 1 more.  I thinned the herd of safe queens awhile back and feel the need to replenish and restock!!!  I've shot IPSC forever and have a boxload of equipment and crap I bought that never gave me anykind of edge at all...holsters...won't even go there!  ::)

I can get a decent SW1911 for about a grand...I'll play with the innards over time I'm sure.  I have a 4 digit Walther PPk/s that I'd rather not carry anymore as it's fairly valuable to collectors (please Lord...don't let me decide to sell it).  Several revolvers, in all kinds of calibers...auto's same deal.

So....it's fun to think and scheme and plan and ponder......

Doug:  if the choice were mine I would add options to include S&W retros in either 44 Special or 45 Colt.  S&W recently reintroduced the M22 (44 Spl, I think) and made a run of M17s in 45 ACP.  They brought back or made a run of 3 of their old time revolvers, the really classic oldies, and I have looked hard for the two I mentioned.  I would probably sell something that I use little or would appreciate not as much.  jmtcw.

Dr. Doug, I voted #1 because it seems to me to be the less common of the options.  I like unique things.  I like variety.  As for "need", it seems to me you don't really "need" any of the guns mentioned, but it does seem to fill a niche.  The 1911 would also be a good option.  I'm not a fan of the PPK.  Shot a couple over the years and have never been that impressed.  If someone gave me one, I'd keep it and shoot it, but I wouldn't purchase one, myself.  But that's just me.  Whatever you get, enjoy.

Let's play with the 510 Hunter idea---this would be fun---we're going to hang the cost.
If you get the octagon with no carvings on it---I know an old boy that can make those carvings look like a fallen cake.
Do a simple search of  dwharris or david wade harris and let your mind wander.
Could be done on the less expensive roscoe with no displeasure to the mind.

Why thanks Mr. Layton!!  I was going to order the round barrel without engraving...though do you think the octagonal barrel is worth the extra $$..could be kinda cool I suspect???  Do we link the slab sided barrel that much??

OK
Here is what you do.
go get a Penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.
put a gun to each coin.
Put the coins in a shot glass and shake!
dump them out.
Is there one that is odd?  Head when the others are tails?  If not continue till you do.
now you have two options.
A- pick that one.
B- take the other three coins nad back into the shot glass.
and shake again looking for an odd coin. then pick that one.
Any of the 4 would be a good addition.

DrDoug,

Go for #1.  It's a big bore, and custom.  Nothing wrong with factory stuff, but if you're looking to add something that will stand out in the collection, be fun to shoot, and useful for hunting; that would be it.  I'd go light with all the engraving...that's the one thing that has kept me from Reeder guns.

Day dreaming is fun and it doesn't cost anything.  I'm dreaming of a 500 Linebaugh on a Bisley.

Good luck!

my recomendation if you want a good big bore is just buy a fa 500we. You could have one in a couple weeks. If you go the custom route id recomend you stick with linebaugh or bowen as there about the only ones thats guns hold any kind of resale value. Also unless you absoultely know that you will never part with it no matter how tough things will get stay away from custom touches like engraving and putting your name on the gun as it makes it even harder to get any money out of them if you sell them down the line.
