VIZSLA & OBSTACLE COURSE TRAINING?
« on: December 20, 2002, 05:24:57 PM »
:)

Guys:
I've have a seven month old male Vizsla and he is a riot.  He has an endless amount of energy and he is already a big part of the family.  He also has the natural retriever instinct...he'll retrieve almost anything thrown and drop it with a "dead" command.   We just finished our first obedience training and he obeys come, sit, stay, heel, don't touch and wait commands...although he still has his "moments".

Anyway, the vet suggested I take him to a local trainer who teaches dogs to run obstacle courses to burn some of that energy off.  Sounds OK...but, do you think it will do him any good or will it screw him up in the field?  I want to end up with a good BIRD DOG!

Your thoughts please.

 I think all training is good for the dogs. It sounds like your dog might be ready for some hunt training and work with birds. Most any training is usefull even if he just burning off some energy. Are you planning to use him for hunting?

:-)
Yes...I want to hunt pheasants with him next year.  I would have taken him out this year, but he is still young...I don't to screw him up.  "WE" still need to work on some obedience skills.

My plan was to introduce him slowly to shotguns...probably at the trap range.  I've seen what taking a dog to the field too early can do...and it's ugly.  I don't want to ruin this dog.  Tried cap guns for starters...they don't phase him a bit.

Chris:

Keep us informed on you and your dogs progress, have you decided to go ahead with the obstacle training? I don't have enough training experience to say one way or the other about it being beneficial to a bird dog, as long as he doesn't run a milo field at full tilt like an obstacle course it doesn't seem like it would do any harm. Good luck.   Harley

I have owned two VIZSLAs.A great dog for sure. The only thing that will wear him out is thinking,As you probably already know these dogs are super smart.Extra training will help but it still won,t wear him out.Go to your local pet store and find some toys that are designed to make a dog think, there are some good ones.Well handled these dogs only get better an smarter,I doubt you will ever wear him out but best luck trying.
Jack..
ps..The only fault these dogs have is that they know how smart they are.LOL..

:D Obstacle course training won't  hurt him. Most training gives some exercise and cooperation training. It sounds like he's ready for some hunt training. It's time to learn what birds are and get used to gunfire if he hasn't learned it yet. He could get a lot of exercise running around a bird field. Swiming is good exercise when its hot
