Stuff you can do without?
« on: November 27, 2009, 03:43:03 PM »
I don't need a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens, or a Vermont Teddy Bear, or a Pajama Gram. I don't need a television. I don't need any five dollar a cup coffee. I don't need sun dried tomatoes. I don't need an electric spice grinder. Man, there's a lot I don't need. I could go on.

The really remarkable thing is how little really matters. It makes it really easy to be thankful for what I have when I strip it down to the essentials.

I agree.  It's not too hard to separate in your mind what you want from what you need.
The hard thing is actually not buying what you want.

Sometimes when I'm at the gun store or gun show I recall exactly how I felt at 10 years old at the toy store.
But I've found I have just as much fun (maybe more) shooting a $65 surplus firearm as I would shooting a $1500 firearm!

YEAH!  I'm obsessive compulsive to a degree- I can't have fun with a gun till it's broke in and beat up or I freak out about every knick and scratch.... and broke in guns are usually reliable (broke-in not bro-KEN)

not hard to separate need from desire.. when I walk into a gun shop (assuming I actually have money to spend) it's like taking a high-dive into quicksand, I'm lucky I get out at all... and some of it comes out with me (bullets, primers, guns occassionally)
I don't feel your pain but my wallet does  ;D

My dear wife has a kitchen full of stuff we can aparently do without.
She never uses any of it, the stuff just takes up space.
Don't tell her I said anything though......... :o

When I look around here at the stuff we've accumulated, I'm thinking we could probably hold a year long garage sale and cancel a huge part of the federal debt if we sent in the proceeds.  Heck, if my wife just sold off the jewelry that she never wears, we'd be able to feed all the homeless starving tots that I see on TV sucker adds.

Just don't go near my shop where I've got my stuff stored; I use it all--even the stuff I forgot that I had.  And all those boats and bikes and motorcycles--I'll get around to using them--pretty soon.

I once made the mistake of cleaning out the gun closet and safe while the wife was home.  Lined everything up in the hallway.  She said, "whose are all these guns?"  It seems I don't need them all.........but she needs her 125 pairs of shoes.

I don't need the dang cell phones, I could make due with 2 way radios or CB's.
I don't need digital clocks, sweeping hand clocks are better and we don't get so concerned about knowing the time to the minute.
We don't need probation officers, we could do much better to replace them with hangmen.

You know, we all joke about our useless stuff. God knows I've accumulated enough stuff in 74 years, but what really tickles me is some folks have so much stuff that they rent storage space to keep it all in.
Wonder what the old mountain men would have thought of that? Everything he owned, he carried with him.
Could say we're spoiled.

You're correct.  However I enjoy my air conditioner and toilet paper, neither of which I had as a kid.  Everything else is optional.

We are spoiled for sure, but the way things are going, that could change.
When I was a youngster.....many, many years ago. I would spend more time at my cousins house than I did at home. At least in the summer. I loved it there.

We had all the modern convinces at home, like electricity, indoor plumbing, radio and 78 rpm record player.natural gas for heating and cooking. My aunt (not auntie back then) and uncle cooked on a wood cook stove, had an out house, two hole variety, and we drew water from a well, with one of those skinny, long, well buckets. I bet some of you remember them! They had no electricity, and went to bed with the chickens, and got up with them as well.

When I stayed with them I had to help milk, slop the hog's and water the stock from that well out back.
"Let me tell you" Three cows can drink water faster than you can draw it from the well, with one of those skinny little buckets.

Toilet paper was a Sears, or Montgomery Ward catalog."Funny thing" the ladies lingerie section was the last thing used ::)

We squirrel, or rabbit hunted almost daily, and ate them too!

Perhaps we need to go back to the basics!........"WHO KNOWS" We might not have a choice. ;D

I have got to the time in my life that I have started buying just the basics.  If it is beyond the basics it is a gimick.
