Which sight for my 44mag?
« on: November 28, 2009, 06:27:49 AM »
I don't like the open sights on my 44mag and want to go with the Williams WGRS sight on the rear. Do any of you know off hand what front sight I will need to match it. My main concern is getting the right height front sight. My rear sight now is mid barrel so I don't think the front would work with the Williams WGRS. I know somebody one here has the answers. ;)

I believe you may be surprised with your front blade.
I have been changing out my Handi/44 rear sight with others seeking an option to the factory rear also.
I mounted a Springfield 73 TD sight to the rear on my rifle. I was concerned as you are with the front. The height was fine.
My Selection is a 1898 30-40 Krag sight that will be mounted in the mid-barrel location. I need to have a Gunsmith drilled and tapped one hole for the permanent install. For the testing I mounted it by the front mount hole of the sight and attached to the factory rear drilled and tapped mid-barrel location.
I did not like the rear location of an Iron sight. The sight is blocked by the hammer, till the hammer is in cocked. For me this is a distraction, as my rifle is a multi-purpose firearm. For target shooting the location would be fine. For other functions, not so good.
I want to say ,who ever drilled and tapped my barrel at the factory for the Iron sights and the scope rail. Thank you for an excellent job of precision measurement. The sights when mounted require no windage adjustment necessary. The Krag sight has no windage and is in perfect alignment with the front sight.

Try your new rear with the existing front. You can change it out if need be later if you need a different one.

I put a WGRS on mine with a Williams Firesight on a shotgun shorty ramp, same combination as on my 45-70 in the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs, works fine with the 225gr Hornady LE ammo at 100yds.  ;)

Tim,

Will you please give me the part numbers of the separate pieces that you used? That is exactly what I want.
It will make my life alot easier if I can just go to the shop and order the parts knowing that they will work for me. ;)

They're both listed in the Peep and Firesights thread, the bottom two Midway links.  ;)

Tim,

I hate to keep bugging you but here goes again.
The page for the shorty ramp says that it comes in different diameters for either the 12 or 20 gauge barrels. which did you have to buy to fit the 44 barrel?
Thanks for the help.

The Midway link is for the .815" ramp which is close to the size of both the 44mag and 45-70 barrel muzzle diameter.  ;)
