Since I got my 1895CB 45-70., I just knew I was going to have to learn how to handload for it. I have gathered most everything I need and well I just couldn't wait for the IMR 3031 or the Factory Crimper. So I rolled up some using 54 grains of H-Varget and some 350 gr Speer HCFN ( they're designed for the 458 Win Mag) and Win LR Primers with once fired Rem brass. I didn't crimp these so I hand fed them one at a time rather than loading up the magazine.
The targets.
All at 50 yds.
All shot with the same load.
Sights are factory front sight and Williams 5D Peep.
The first target was just to see if I was on the paper. Wasn't worried about grouping.
Second target I beared down on.
Third target I shot after adjusting the sights a little.
First thoughts. Not bad grouping. I'd like to claim I was trying to make a happy face on the second target but that would be untrue.
Recoil was stiff and I had to roll up a hunting vest for a sissy pad. It only took two shots to convince me that one was required!!!
I'd rather be comfortable than bruised. I didn't chronograph these shots but you could definately tell the difference between them and a few Remington 405's that I let fly afterwards. Note to file..... Heavy loads NOT required unless I'm hunting moose with this rifle.
LuLu is a bit of a handfull when the loads are stiffened up. I will keep her and my shoulder happy with softer stuff.
All for now. Off to a controlled hunt tomorrow. To bad I can't bring LuLu. I will however be shooting a .458 bullet out of my Omega. Two shots at 100 both dead on with 110 gr T7, so it is ready to go and the 1187 20 ga is bang on at 50 with the Winchester Partition Golds. Hopefully the deer co-operate.
Someone mentioned that it was only the beginning. Now I know what they ment.
