.44 Special
« on: November 28, 2009, 01:46:13 PM »
I was talking to an "insider", and he stated that the .44 Special Blackhawk was going to become a regular catalog item. Later I checked the new catalog, and sure enough, there it was.......
It's about time. Of course I wish that they had decided to use the lighter aluminum grip frame to make it lighter than the .44 Mags, but that is just me.

Kinda been known for a bit now - keep up man!   :D

Most kinda prefer the steel gripframes.  Besides, if that extra bit of weight is that big on an issue...toughen up, get up and shape up.  We're taking ounces here not pounds.  maybe a .32 pr .22 is better as they're small framed and the cartridges weigh less too.  ;D

Also rumor of a stainless one and the New Vaquero in this chambering as well as distributor runs.

I could get excited about that.

Well, I certainly have .44 Mags, .454's and .45 Colts that are heavier than the .44 Special, and even with cancer, and chemo, they don't strain me excessivly when I go to the range like you do. I was only suggesting that a .44 Special in the same weight range as my 4 5/8" .45 Colt Blackhawk would be a nice gun. I see no point in a .44 Special that is the same weight as my 5 1/2" .44 Mag Super Blackhawk. I also apologize for being so out of touch. .

I agree.  A .44 Special in a light package is a very desireable gun.  Hope you are feeling better.  No apologies necessary on your part.

Just for fun I put an aluminum grip frame on my Lipsey's gun. It really did make for a nice lightweight package. As you noted, those 45's are sure nice for packing. The 44 felt the same with the lighter grip frame and also ERH.

It really is not about how tough or "in shape" you are. It is about the feel of the gun when carrying it. I don't like a heavy gun if I am carrying on a pants belt as it feels like it is always pulling them down, and sometimes on the pants belt is the most convenient.

One thought..if you someday get one of the 44's I bet you would have no trouble finding someone to trade grip frames with if you wanted an aluminum GF. It would not be an XR3, but would feel like your 45. Also there seem to be quite a few of the aluminum GF's on the used market. If you decide to get one, hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine.

My final note...(could not leave it alone) some of us just spend too much time shooting/hunting when we should be spending it on the internet....then we would be more "caught up"!

:-)   Yes, my .45 Colt / ACP is just a half pound lighter than my 5 1/2" Super Blackhawk, and I do notice that when in the woods all day carrying a holstered gun. I am a fan of the short barreled .41 Mag. Blackhawks for the same reason. I had a flattop Blackhawk .44 Mag. that someone had cut to 4 5/8" before I got it, and it was a great carry gun. Because I usually had it with me, I shot a lot of critters with that thing. Unfortunately, my kids needed shoes more than I needed the Blackhawk at the time.

I wish someone would make an aluminum Bisley gripframe for the blackhawks.  My lighter guns go for walks with me more frequently than the heavier ones.

Or how about a Ruger the same size as a Colt?

Since Bisleys are widely preferred for the heavier loads, it makes more sense to have the extra ounce or two  over an aluminum equivilant.     I gotta say that it seems lately everyone is up in arms about steel grip frames v aluminum ones.  C'mon people, we're talking ounces here not pounds.  Guess you'd NEVER make it with a brass one they weigh a couple ounces more than a steel one.    :o   ::)

Steel frames certainly have their place, and I enjoy having them to dampen the recoil, and change the balance of my longer barreled handguns. Currently, all of my .44 Mags, one .45 Colt, and my .454 are all wearing steel grip frames. I do like the lighter frames for all day holster carry since the force of recoil is brief, and the force of gravity is forever. If you carried a gun in a holster all day, you would understand the importance that several ounces makes to your comfort......... I will agree that if I were still in the condition I was in Vietnam, that holstered guns wouldn't bother me much, but I carried one every day, all day, and that makes a difference too. Of course my 1911 weighed something like 39 ounces anyway.  It is a slippery slope we are talking about here, but I think the break point for real comfort is between 35, and 40 ounces. Just think about how many folks won't carry a Ruger SP101 because it is "too heavy" at 26 ounces. I'm certainly not trying to talk anyone out of lugging a 54 ounce handgun all day, and I have, but I don't do it for pleasure. The most macho thing about using any hangun is being very proficient with it, and using it with very good judgement. In my experience, those that have become very good handgun hunters are very good hunters, that exercise good judgement, and are proficient with their handguns.  I have one friend that regularly takes deer, and large ones sometimes with his old 1917 .45 ACP. To me, that guy is a macho handgun user, and he doesn't have to buff up, or carry a heavy gun to prove it. You know, come to think of it I wouldn't want to tangle with him on a dark street with his 1911 either........... not that I haven't done that kind of tangling long ago, and far away.

I do a lot of hiking and go out on snow shoes in the winter. I prefer the 36 oz. 45 Colt Blackhawk for all day carry. A light weight 44 Special would be a good trail gun as well. I have found that the real key for all day comfort when carrying a revolver on the hip is to spend the money on a good thick gun belt. The Bianchi leather belt I use was well worth the money.

Very true!  I see very few people getting GOOD leather.  Seems most are more concerned with fancy and showy leather than getting a GOOD sturdy set-up that allows the weight to seemingly disappear.  Actually, most seem to be more concerned with spending as little as possible.  If they only stepped up, spent a little more, they'd get a LOT better product and me far more comfortable when they carry.
Wonder if they'd buy a ZR1 'Vette and then put retreads on it to save $$$.  They'd at least have the look as they drove around.  ;D
