gun safe
« on: November 29, 2009, 06:14:12 AM »
If I put a gun safe in the garage, will the cold and hot temperatures cause any rusting or oxidizing on any of my firearms or brass cases?  Thank you!

That is why they make either the Golden rods (electric heaters to keep the temp and humidity constant) they make different sizes depending on the size of your safe.
Or they make passive dehumidifiers that drain water.  I use the electric Remington one in mine.
It is good in that it has a color band on crystals that tell you when to recharge it.  About thirty bucks.

Had one in the garage for years, I keep a bag of desiccant in the safe and the guns are stored in a silicone sock, no problem!  Course I live in dry West Texas where I could just about leave them on the porch without a rust problem, ::)

A friend uses a 100 watt bulb in the safe to generat heat and prevent moisture, that works for him.

as long as you do as mentioned in the previous post you should be alright but still check every so often you do not have to use a 100 wat in that small a space but it will work. i would say the golden rod and dessicant combined would be best in a garage. jmo

I think it depends on your safe and the oil you coat your guns with.  My safe has been in the unattached garage for four years now without a dessicant or heater.  I haven't experienced any rust or corrosion on any of my guns, and I live in the Inland Northwest.
Thanks for the stump
