Seriously,
A guy I worked with in our machine shop told me Simple Green cleaner worked great.
Worth a try.
Good for cleaning black powder guns too.
They have various products, but this is what we used in the shop, plain old simplegreen cleaner.

I've heard tomato paste/sauce works too - don't know for sure.

In the world of trapping I have not done that much, but I have done enough to know that one has to be careful, and not replace a wild smell such as skunk, with a human smell such as soap, or chemical. Am I right or wrong here trapper professionals. I'm a novice.

Soap is no big deal, and the recipe lee gave is the ultimate in skunk stink removal.Just don't enclose the concoction in a closed container.
Soap washes off very easily and it is not a major concern in the skunk removal concoction.

If you are going to re-set the same spot, I wouldn't worry about the skunk smell.  It smells the same as all the dirt within the catch circle.  Around here some skunk oder will attract after it mellows out a little.  Fox and coyotes seem to like to check it out.

If you are finished with that spot and want to clean up the trap, then the peroxide/baking soda/soap is the way to go.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

RdFx and Bog are correct with the mix they speak of. I've been skunked more than my share and I do use the mix they mention to clean up. Baking soda alone goes a long way in keeping odors down. I go to the feed mill and buy a 100lb bag, last one was under $20.00. They call it sodium bicarbonate and it is the same thing far as I know. I sprinkle the stuff on the floor where I skin/scrap and use it and dish soap when I hose out the truck bed. I throw a cup full in when the washing machine with my trapping clothes. When you buy it cheap enough you can be pretty liberal with it.

skunk essence is a oiley type substance, any solvent will cut it.gasoline was i always what i used when trapping. then just just use a soap to get rid of the solvent smell. as far as it is on a trap. i never worried about it, predators love it.
