Accuracy with the 400M in a Marlin 1895ss
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:21:58 AM »
Veral, I'm having trouble getting this bullet to shoot well in my Marlin. I have shot very good groups with a cast bullet from another mould weighing very close to the M bullet. Both are sized very close to the same and the hardness is also. Checked on an LBT hardness tester the M as I cast it shows an 11 and the other bullet a 10. Both wear gas checks. I'm using IMR 3031 and the velocity has been chrono'd to an average of 1800 fps. I have tried other powders as well and have tried shooting water quenched bullets which hardened to 20 BHN with no better accuracy. The M at 100 yards is shooting 4" to 5" groups with this rifle and it is scoped. Can you point me in the direction I need to go to get this bullet to shoot in this rifle? This gun will shoot cast bullets and shoots factory jacketed well. The only thing I have found with this gun is it likes the heavier slugs better. Never liked the 300 grain pills cast or jacketed. Thanks Veral.

You have me stumped without more details, and I don't know what details to ask for, because you seem to know cast pretty well.  I have sold MANY M molds over I guess a 15 year period since bringing that profile out, and you are the first to date has had an accuracy complaint.
Best procedure is for you to contact me direct through email at    LBTisAccuracy@Imbris.net     and I'll work with you till be get the problem rooted out.  Then if you like we can post the answer on this forum.

I got into a similar situation with a 30-06 shooter a short time ago, and the post got quite long before I told him the same thing.  We have found the answer for him now, and will be posting that soon, but your situation is something unique again.

I never shine anyone off, so don't quit bugging me till we find your problem.  Email will work far faster because I answer it every day, whereas I only come to the forum once or twice a week normally, which could drag your problem out for a coons age.
