Anyone use 7mm-08 for Rifle Silhouettes?
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:22:25 AM »
I just picked up a 7mm-08 for hunting.  I am working up a hunting load and was thinking this would be a fun rifle to play 500 meter silhouettes at our yearly 500m pistol match.

Anyone use the 7mm-08 for silhouette?  Favorite loads?  I will shoot 200 meter chickens standing and everything from 350 on with my shooting sticks so I am basically practicing my hunting posture.  I don't want to use my Nosler Partitions for silhouette so would appreciate any silhouette loads that work for you.  Bullet weight and velocity?  Powder?

Steve :)

Steve, for the c,p,t I use the 130 gr smk for the rams I use the 168 gr smk and I use varget powder in all bullet weights. Velocity in the 2500 fps range is good maybe 2600 for the 130 gr bullet.

Thanks for the info.  I have some Varget and H414 on my bench ready to weight out a few loads.

I use around 36 grains of Varget for 139-140 grain bullets for C, P & T, with a muzzle velocity around 2,500 fps and 40.5 grains of Varget with Sierra 168 HPBT's for the rams at 500 meters, with a muzzle velocity of about 2,550 fps.

Both loads are easy on the shoulder and have yet to leave anything hit standing.

I have a Mauser action with Sihlen barrel and Fajen stock with a Jard trigger in 7-08.  I load 34 grains of IMR 4064 with 162 grain Hornady A-max's.  I use it on everything and it never left anything hit.  I hit rams in the foot and they went over.  It shot equally well with 36 grains of powder but I went with less recoil.

I was using 120 grain Hornady V-max, with 41 grains of Varget.  Shot a lot flatter, but with more recoil.  Saw no reason to continue using it.  Shot chickens and pigs with that load.

I used to use a .270 win.  I like this a lot better.

cig: I have shot the 162 Amax bullet in my 7br and it shot very well on paper but I never used it on rams. I did use the hornady 162 sst on rams and I rung some of them so I assumed the 162 Amax would ring rams also, it's good to here that the 162Amax takes down the rams reliably. My current ram bullet is the 168smk and it does very well on rams.

I have been trying the 175 gr. Sierra Match in my 7-08 with
Varget on the rams. I have a Krieger barrel with a 1-8 twist. So far no dings on rams.

I have used the hornady 139gr btsp. over win 748 for all targets and they work great. I know this seems light for the rams but they do work better than expected.

I used a 7-08 back in the 80's when it was a wildcat and loved it compared to the '06 I had been using

borrowed rifle and ammo, so can't help there

glad to hear it is still alive in Silhouettes
