Coleman vs Igloo
« on: November 30, 2009, 11:45:20 AM »
I have had 2 Igloo coolers in the past 10 years.  Both developed problems with the hinges tearing off.
I don't think I abused them or anything, just normal stuff.
Maybe it's just me, I don't know.
If you were purchasing a new large cooler, say 70 qt or larger, which would you buy?

I've still got my Dad's Coleman that would be about 50 yrs. old now.  Still works great.  Of course, it's metal cased with metal hinges.  Based on the quality built into it, I would probably buy Coleman.

I've had those plastic hinges break on some of my coolers too. Rather then scrap them, I bought some hinges and put them on the cooler with self tapping screws. Been a few years now and there holding up good!!!

Igloo all the way.  The tops are insulated, many Coleman coolers are not.  Igloo sells new hinges if you need them

Years ago, I saw a cooler hinge that had been replaced with a section cut from a leather belt.  Owner said it works better in cold weather when plastic gets brittle.  I've also seen the sections of brown rubber hose used.  Problem with the rubber hose is that if it is so old that you are willing to cut it up, it probably won't last long as a hinge either.

Coleman and Igloo are both quality brands.

Here in Bristol Bay Ak a number of friends prefer Igloo over Coleman because of the way the lid seals work. We carry our in open boats. The Igloos tend to keep rain and water out of the cooler better than the Colemans.  I have an Igloo that is going to disintegrate on me one of these days. Must be over 15 yrs old. Hinges are fine - its a 54 qt size I think - white marine version. Its had so many heavy loads of stuff banged around in it that the interior plastic lining is cracking. We've hauled a lot of frozen meat in it on airlines  as well as the out door camping abuse. It used to be perfect when the baggage limit was 70 lbs. Now we can't fill it up.

We repair the lids on our igloos with strapping from a semi trailer. If it will hold down the load on a trailer figured it would work fine on an ice chest ;D ;D Last forever

I've replaced the hinges on my Igloo's, the only problem I can see with that is the shipping cost more than the Hinges..Come on Igloo stop ripping us off!!
