What weapon? What boat?

Anyone know what's goin' on here?  This is the better-conditioned half of a stereo card. for use in a stereo viewer.  These things were all the rage in the late 19th C.

Thought it was kind of interesting, maybe someone has seen it elsewhere with a caption?  No idea what boat, the people have wide hats like perhaps old Navy unifs, but weapon does look like some kind of mountain howitzer.  So if this was indeed Navy folks, they wouldn't be caught dead with an Army-type mountain howitzer unless perhaps this is some Span-Am war captured piece?  The Spanish smoothbore mountain howitzer of the mid-19th C. looks a lot like the US counterpart, can't really see well enuf for details.

I was thinking Spanish American war but by what can be seen of the rigging and the amount of wood on
this ship I am thinking earlier - though it is hard to tell as fuzzy as the image is........ 1870's?   
Navy rifled howitzer 500lb? it's a shame the photo is such poor quality otherwise it might be enlarged....

You know John that sounds as pluasable as any . A trophy gun coming home .

On the otherhand it could be some sour looking people on    some   ship on their way there ?

My geuss is that "If they are Americans" cause the unies dont look quite right ? They are on their way home with a trophy and in that case their unies are salty and their campain hats have a 25 mission crush .

I bet if we search da web we could find some photos of troops returning from Span-Am war for comparison.  Might even find another shot of this motley crew from another camera.

Actually a few Navy ships at the beginning of the CW had some moutain howitzers aboard. The Young America is one that comes to mind. Also some of the confederate river gunboats were equipped with some. One has to remember at the start of the war we had approx. 47 ships fit for sea and most of them were on station thruout the world.

If you could cite a reference for that, I'd appreciate it.  I've been all through the Record of Naval Guns which records every last weapon reported by every USN ship, as required, in the Quarterly Return of Ordnance, and there's no "mountain howitzer" in the book(s) anywhere.

Certainly ;D!!!! Official records of the Navy series 1, Vol 4 pg 351 and 354.

After the capture of the steam tug Young America, Flag Officer Pendergasts request that Col. Dimick commanding Fortress Monroe furnish him with a couple light artillery pieces or howitzers. pg. 351

Later Pendergast reports that he has kept the tug Young America in his squadron after being armed with two mountain howitzers compliments of Col. Dimick. pg. 354


this is the only Union ship I have documented but many of the western gunboats had 12 pounders aboard many of which would have been dahlgrens boat howitzers but I tned to believe most of the boat howitzers might have gone to the blockading fleets first.
