ballistics question
« on: November 30, 2009, 02:55:07 PM »
I searched the forums in search of an answer but I couldn't understand it.  I guess.

I have an omega.  I am shooting 250 grain shockwaves with 90 grains of black mag 3.  How can I find a ballistics chart?   It would be nice to have an idea where I am at 50 yds, 100 yds and 150 yds.  I doubt I will shoot farther than that with a muzzleloader.  I am not even sure if it is feasable to shoot further.  Any help from anyone that knows more than I is much appreciated.  One last question.  any tips on getting them to load a little easier.

Try to get an estimate of your muzzle velocity (the load data likely gives this).  Then get the ballistic coefficient (bullet manufacturer's literature should have it.  At that point you can go to http://www.jbmballistics.com/ and get your trajectory.

You will need to decide what range to sight in at.  But from there it should be pretty simple.

You can shoot further, but range estimation becomes more and more critical and accuracy drops off.

you'll have pretty close to a dead zero @ 150 yds (maybe a tad low) if you sight in dead on at 25 yds.  ARO 3 1/2" high at 100.  All loads are different.  Go out and shoot it, and best of luck!  With 120gr loose Pyro and 200 SW in 45, my Disc Extreme's DZ is 165 yds.

You're most welcome!

BTW  You can get an early idea of the trajectories by comparing the 44-40 and 44 magnum in rifle calibers.  Remington, for example, has a nice presentation of ballistics for their cartridges.  The link here is for just these two:

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/comparative_ballistics_results.aspx?data=R4440W*RH44MGA
(BTW I don't know whether this link will work on your computer because it may be using cookies.  So, if it doesn't, try
http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics and selecting the calibers and bullet weights.)

The key here is that with both sighted in at 100 yd, the difference in drop at 150 yards is only about 5 inches.  This means that DennyRoark's suggested sight in is an excellent starting point.

Nonetheless, you will be well served by going through the steps of getting your MV, BC, and trajectory, and confirming/adjusting your points of impact at the range.

Good luck -- I know you'll have fun!
