2 deer fall to the .223

I don't normally hunt deer with my .223's but it just so happened that I had to this year.  I was out hunting hogs several weeks ago and my Colt M4 is my preferred hog gun.  I walked up on a nice 10pt in creek and after a few minutes of looking at each other and moving in and out of cover he finally gave me a shot.  Nice buck, netted 110 B&C.  This past weekend I was at my wife's family's place and we were wanting to cull some of our young spikes out.  Again the M4 was with me, but for coyotes.  I forgot my ammo for my 30-06 so when another cousin showed up and used the loaner rifle, I again too the M4.  After sitting in the stand for a while watching a couple of young 8pts, I took a walk down the hill.  When I came back, a spike was standing just at the tree line watching me and he too fell to the .223.  The bullet was a 55gr Sierra GameKing SBT.  I was able to recover the bullet out the spike.  On the left is the 55gr and on the right is my normal deer bullet, a .30 cal 150gr GameKing.  Just shows how effective a properly constructed .224 bullet can be when used within it's range limits.

It looks that little GameKing mushroomed perfectly. Did you happen to weigh it? I'd be really curious to see how much weight it retained. Good story and picture.

Bullet weighed 53.3grs.  That's 96.9% weight retention!

And in another thread we have a member who's NEVER EVER gonna use those 150 grain 7mm Game Kings on deer cuz they just blow up and fail to get to the vitals.

Yeah, I seem to remember that.  I'll also say that my 30-06 shooting the pictured bullet did a complete pass-through of a coyote just behind the ribs at 125yds.  It looked like a .30 hole going in and maybe a .338 going out.  Almost no expansion.  They do need a bit of resistance to expand apparently.

I used this same bullet to take a smallish buck at a range of about 30yds.  The first shot punched through the front leg, shoulder, into the ribs with a silver dollar sized hole, back out the ribs onto the other side going into the off shoulder somewhere. (sorry) I didn't recover the bullet.

This little bullet certainly has what it takes in the penetration dpt to ruin bambi's day. The deer pictured below didn't make it 15' from the first shot before doing a faceplant onto the creek.

The second shot (running shot) punched clean through the thickest part of neck with a ragged quarter sized exit. (always shoot again if I can, learned this shooting big and small cartridges)
