Rossi 92 (LSI) Lever Question.
« on: December 01, 2009, 07:34:28 PM »
Hello everyone:
I have a LSI 92 trapper (bolt safety model) in 45 Colt, that BIG HOOP lever is just not my thing.
Where might I locate a standard lever for one of these? any ideas?
Many thanks and happy hunting.

I know what ya mean. There is no way one with such a large loop lever would come home with me. I'm not sure if they use the same stock as regular levers do or not but if so then just replacing it and it alone would hopefully restore it to a useful condition.

I'd think you could get them thru Rossi owned by Taurus so don't expect fast or decent customer service. But I'd think any Winchester M92 type lever to fit so you might contact folks like Gun Parts Corp., Brownell's or the folks who specialize in working on such guns.

From both your comments, it would seem that neither of you have had to use a levergun in weather so cold/nasty that required the use of heavy gloves/mittens on the shooter/hunter's hands.

The bigger loop makes handling a levergun so equipped while so handcuffed a snap.

Are you kidding? I was smart enough to be born in the deep south and lucky enough to not move.  :o Or is that the other way around?  ;D

Nope I don't do cold nasty weather and honestly for the most part shoot my lever guns in nice weather for the deep south which is kinda like summer in cold climates.

I have seen two types of over size levers. One is appropriate for use with gloves as you mention. The other a HUGE monstronsity like John Wayne was saddled with in the movie. The former I can understand if heavy gloves are needed where you hunt, the latter to me is just plain stupid. Which the OP was referring to I dunno.

That hoop is so big, you'd have to be wearing a raccoon on your hand to fill it!!!!! ;D

Which end of the raccoon does your hand go in? :D :D

I'm with you guys... those big loops look ridiculous.
Worse comes to worse you might be able to cut and shape it to your liking and silver solder it back together. :-\

That may very well happen if I don't come up with one before next hunting season ;)
and BTW.......... its a well known fact, the properly dressed woodsman, ALWAYS puts a raccoon on his hand butt first, so the trigger finger sticks out the mouth, which fits easily into the trigger guard LOL!!!

I have been enjoying these remarks about the loop of the lever-gunz.
I have 3 lever-gunz of different Mfr.s and in all 3 cases the lever is too small for my hand, (and my hands are not all-that big.)
Replacements run about $150 (and up) for bigger loops and I'm shopping carefully while I save my pennies. I don't want one any bigger than I need to get my hand comfortably in it.
I agree, they [the big loops] look silly but I find function to be what attracts me most.
Since I have straight-stock models I've thought of getting  replacements from Gun Parts Corp. (for about $30) and cutting both to get a slightly longer loop which is all I need.
A little cutting, welding, grinding/sanding and finishing is all it'd take.
Piece of cake, right?
It seems different Mfr.s have different size loops.
I am amazed that anyone would want a "normal-sized" loop as they are a little too small for most folks I know.
That "Trapper" model does have an awful big loop though.
It takes a moment of weakness to buy one of those I guess.

Oh, and GB, it's the other way around...you were lucky [blessed] to be born/raised in the south and smart enough to stay there.
Now if we could just talk the rest of the south into NOT selling their land to the Yankees... ;)

I wear a size large glove and have owned many lever guns, never had one yet that the lever loop needed to be larger for me. As I said I don't wear and don't need huge gloves. When I need gloves for hunting I wear thin leather and if more than that is needed stick my gloved hands inside a hand blanket to keep them warm.

Wow GB,
I wear a size medium "thin leather" glove in cold weather.
Its too small so I cut out the fingers-tips, (a habit from working on a framing crew for years,) which makes them fit right.
Large gloves are a sloppy fit on my hands so I don't use them.
With my naked hand I can only get 2 fingers well into the loop and the 3rd [pinky] finger is wedged in behind them.
Downright unpleasant when using full-power 45/70 loads.
It doesn't seem to matter with the Browning 308 or the LSI-Puma 454.
I'd just like it better if I had another 1/2-inch of room in all the loops.
I guess its a personal thing.

If the levers will fit sounds like a trade is in order

I'm with Greybeard, the large loops are ridiculous, even the standard loops are too large for most shooters.  Almost all Cowboy Action shooters use leather wraps to take up about 1/2 the space in a standard loop so their hand will fit.  Terbltim you must have a terbl big hand.

BTW - Since I've swapped them out a few times for friends, Rossi standard levers interchange with Rossi Big Loop levers, AND new Big Loop levers are available from the Rossi Parts dept, through Taurus @ about $70.
