V6 minitrucks serve no purpose whatsoever. They have no room inside, and are just as expensive to buy and get worse mileage then their v8 powered full sized counterparts. If I'm gonna buy a truck that gets 16mpg I'm gonna buy the one with plenty of room and power.

Just dont buy an obamamobile(chev/dodge). We must train the government to stay outa free enterprise and let the chips fall where they may!

A V-8 isn't going to average 18 mpg.

A V-8 isn't going to average 18 mpg.

A 5.3 will do it every day or so close it won't matter unless you drive with a lead foot. Now the Toyota v8 wont, by all accounts it's one thirsty motor.

Of course it's not like the trucks in question  will average 18 in any but the best circumstances. If the small v6 trucks got 22MPG they would make sense. But at 16 +or-.....not so much

All 4x4 crew cab, auto
V6 Taco= 18mpg combined
v6 Frontier= 16mpg combined
v8 GMC 5.3= 17 combined
v8 F150 4.6= 16mpg combined
Hemi Ram= 15mpg combined

I beg to differ. It will if it's a Toyota full size truck. That's all I've driven for the past 5 or 6 years so I should know.

I have a friend with a full size Toyota pu, and it takes a good day for him to get over 18mpg.  He doesn't drive with a flat foot either...

I believe it's possible to get 18mpg.  My Echo gets 54mpg but it averages 39.

my full sized chev 4x4 club cab with a 5.3 will get 20mpg on the highway easily. My neigbors dodge hemi ram club cab gets 18 and another neighbor with a fulls sized toyota v8 says he gets 17-18. We dont allow fords on the road so i cant tell you what they get.

I have owned 5 tacomas and currently have a 2002 4w-d with a v-6.   I put oversize tires on it to slow down the tach a little and if I really pussyfoot it I can get 23 MPG city-highway.   I usually sell them when they get about 170,000 and then get upset when the buyer tells me later he is still driving it with over 300k on it.  Change oil and fuel filters and treat them right and they are bullet proof.

My father-in-law's 4.8L Chevy 4x4 Ext. Cab doesn't get 20 on the highway.  Right around 17, and he doesn't go over 55 unless he has too.  I was not impressed with the mileage it gets, my old '93 F150 4x4 Ext. Cab with the 5.0 got 20 on the highway.  I had a '91 S10 Blazer 4x4 that got 19 on the highway.

People don't buy the midsize trucks for gas savings, they buy them because they want a 4x4 but not a full-size truck.  Why do you think that All-wheel drive vehicles like the Freestyle/Taurus and the Subaru's are so popular now?  They aren't setting any fuel savings records either, not to mention being hard on tires.

There have been a lot of times that I've been in tight areas that I needed 4x4, but a full-size truck was too big to manuever.  An old friend of mine lives in Colorado and trail rides a lot with his Ranger 4x4.  He can't count how many times he's seen full-size trucks backing down a trail because they couldn't fit through a tight area, and there was no where to turn around.  :o

Oh, and I like the Frontier better than the Tacoma, but honestly, the Tacoma will last forever with minimum care.

Have no experience with the Frontier, but am extremely happy with my 2005 Tacoma 4.0L 4x4.  Gets an honest 22MPG on the highway and has never dipped below 18MPG even with short drives and two-tracking.

Wouldn't own either of the "government" brands - just a matter of principle.

It's really weird how milage differs between folks...  This is what i've seen myself, as i've been in these late model pu's on trips.

My friend in NH's full V8 toyota got 18 mpg, when him and i went on a trip.

Two neighbors of mine are brothers, and live together.  One bought a 2009 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 5.3 V8, and it will get 20 on a trip.  The other has a 2008 3/4 ton with a 6.0 V8.  It gets 18mpg on a trip if he holds it to 70mph or less.

My other neighbor has a 1/2 ton with a small V8, don't know if it's a 5.3 or the smaller one, but i've seen it get 19 with a pretty big load of bale spears in the bed.  They were below the bed sides, but quite heavy.

Everyone has a story, but the above i saw myself.

Another friend has a late model Chevy 1/2 ton with a V8.  (don't know what one) He was just in SD on his annual pheasant hunt, and he said he got 20 mpg on the round trip...  I believe him, as he has always been honest about gas milage with me in the past.

A little off subject but a F-150 is your best buy out there and more truck. Toyota are darn good but have been slipping a bit. If I needed a new truck today, an f 150. The Eco boost injection will be out in a few years and will give 25% better fuel mileage.

LOL ecoboost.

You gotta give ford marketers props for really sucking in the masses with this catch phrase.

You know because forced induction always boosts economy ;) and is synonymous with saving the environment.

Not that I'm against BOOST mind you ;D But I'm not gonna sell you on the stuff with false pretenses of saving the environment or fuel economy

Ford, GM or Dodge. All of my GM truck products (8 of them) went well over 100,000 miles and even the full size V-8's averaged at least 18mpg (the S-10's with a V-6 got 27-30mpg). My '96 ram gets about 17 mpg and is still strong with 277,000 miles on it. My Ford (company truck) is still getting broke in at 50,000 miles but with the small 4.6l V-8 milage is only 15mpg. I don't mess with success.

Well I have had the Chevy's, Dodges and now own Ford when it comes to trucks! All I can say is a V-6 in a truck is not the way to go, especially if your hauling and looking for a lot of miles down the road in 8 years etc. I know that the 4.6 Ford V-8 runs and runs for ever without down time! I have seen many in past years with over 250,000 miles on them, heck my dealership has to in service now with over 300,000 miles on them.

I purchase a truck to use buy hauling and pulling various loads and a couple years ago went the route of another Ford in an F-350 Superduty with V-10 gas engine. I don't like the smell of diesel fuel and once went through that fuel line freeze up BS, while in Wyoming hunting.....never again. My 6400-lb truck gets 15 miles to the gallon empty cruising 72mph on the interstate empty, around town I get 11.5 or 12.5 depending on conditions. It is an extended cab 4 x 4 but it hauls and pulls whatever I need to go down the road. FORD makes trucks that last!!! I am not into Japan or Chinese trucks or automobiles period.
