Not gonna happen, the total vote count of 219 wasn't even enough, let alone to get everyone on the same page.  :(

Tim

Looks like I've got to get another .223 barrel and have it rebored.

i voted for the 30-40. i'd like to have a traditional cal. in a traditional looking gun like the bc, would also be interested in a long barrel 30-30. good luck with your poll.

GB, you are right. This is like going to a restaurant with too big of a menu that still says,"but we'll do it your way".
How about a different approach?
Define the 'style' c/w barrel length, ie, classic (as in BC) or varminter (MC butt, laminated) X 26"
Then, as has been said, pick a chambering that is not problematic for them to do. Maybe a small cal., a med. cal., and a big bore (only 3 choices).
and see if there can be any consensus.
And (I am guilty too) as insightful as all the commentary is, anything outside of the stated poll choices is only removing us farthur from the objective.
To return myself to same, I vote #1) 30-30, #2) 30-40K, or reverse the order, either is fine.

A part of the problem has been when NEF/Marlin ran things,I was told their polls were done locally, which meant shorter barrels were favored over longer barrels as well as the caliber choices, since this was influenced by where the polls we being done. I don't know how Remington is doing it or if they even bother, but it would be nice to see all of the existing caliber choices made available with various barrel lengths.I wouldn't cost them any more than it does now. Caliber choices within the limitations of the rifle should be more than a few special runs.Having a 28" heavy barrel 35Whelen/30-06/280/270 may not interest many here..but I certainly would like to own one and would jump at the chance, but the problem is when the mind set is against it from the company, getting them to change is a very difficult thing to do,even if it doesn't cost any more. Many there (as well as here) don't see the need for it..and argue against it.It's a mind set that runs rampant, and is/was what influenced what was/is offered.

I think a 338 caliber choice would be great.Several would be wonderful. Several barrel lengths and configurations would be ideal. The same can be said for any other caliber choice. If they would allow us to place an order for a barrel as we wanted it and then send the frame in,they would see a healthy increase in sales for sure..but that causes other problems that they may not want to deal with, that being direct competition with their other product lines,as well as their price structuring, and also the staffing to get the orders out in a timely fashion.

Sad as it is all one has to do is look at the Marlin bolt guns and see what is being produced and look at the street cost for these rifles to see what I mean.It too is an excellent rifle, but it too is hamstrung by backwards thinking as well as being in direct competition with the money maker model 700..Unfortunately,the Handi is in the same boat, and even further down on the food chain for the mother company I'm afraid.

What you really need is the popularity of a TC so someone would make and weld on under lugs on a quality barrel. Until then Wayne's cut rifled rebores will have to do.

Very interesting poll................I'm amazed only two people mentioned what I thought would be the most obvious choice, a caliber I'm very surprised H&R doesn't offer already - 7.62x39 - accurate and lethal out to 150 yds, cheap as can be - I'd have thought it would be a natural fit - good quality, value priced rifles chambered for the best bang for the buck cartridge out there.

H&R made rifles in 7.62x39 in 2006, but discontinued them because of the complaints of no fires from too many owners wanting to shoot that cheap crap in them that isn't made to SAAMI specs, the hard, recessed primers won't work in them, so they're history, much to the dismay of those that would like to use sporting ammo in them which worked fine.  :-\

I have to say that I would prefer the .338 Marlin for the simple reason of having a truly modern Elk caliber.  But I would accept the .257 Roberts, as long as it has a lightwt barrel.  I'm not thinkin' we can come to an easy agreement here.  44 Man

I know this isn't a choice, but I REALY enjoy loading and shooting the 7.62X54R which (IMO) would be awesome in the Handi with the rimmed case. The other winners (for me) would be the 303 Brit and the 30-40 Krag. Yes, I wear bifocals and such which dictates my choices and I truly admit to loving the classics.......  ;D

I voted for .338 Marlin.

I don't have any interest in the caliber, but would sell my eye teeth for a .338 bore in a handy.

I think "blank" barrels with underlugs fitted in various calibers would be a great way to allow people to get what they want. Sell them all long and the buyer can have the smith trim to desired length when s/he has it chambered. Savage is selling actions now, it seems to me Remington can do something that caters to gunsmithing.

I don't know what "eye" teeth go for these days ;D ;D ;D but you can have a 338 bore with a lot less pain that having perfectly good eye teeth removed..

You can

Take 1 223 bull barrel and have it chambered to 338 Marlin..or Federal..or most any wildcat 338..22" or 24"

or you can take a 22" or 24" 243 or 308 and have it redone..

Or you can take a 26" 25-06,a 22" or 24" 270,30-06 and have it chambered for the 338-06 A-Square

Or you can take a 280 barrel..and have it redone to a 338 Gibbs or the like..

There are other ways too like stubbing...

All are less painful as well.. ;)

Well, it sounds like I'm too late to the party, but my vote would be for a 30/40 chambered BC. That would really be something.

As soon as I saw this I voted for the good 'ol .45acp!  Like mentioned earlier, I'd love to have a handi chambered to match my sidearm.  Not to mention, once made it could always be bored out to 460 rowland if that's your thing  ;) I'd make a fantastic little brush gun.  Btw, someone mentioned that the 45LC doesn't sell....well, just think of the disparity in popularity between .45acp and .45LC.

Build the .45acp handi, and they will come (to buy it  ;D ).

H&R's extra barrel program could pay for reamers very fast if they would offer any safe chamber in any of their bore sizes for an additional $50.

Would you buy your now-unavailable favorite for $50 additional?

Yes, I would pay $50  extra  --- How about a cal. just for a year  say 45 ACP   I'm a small cal. person   -- but if I had a chance to get a 45 ACP,  I'd jump ....
All of us are very differant  -- some shoot in the woods, Others out on the plains and grass land   -- Most hunt - others  like targets,, I like plincking,, and no one single gun fits all -- But everyone has a -- "If I had one gun this is it "  I want more then one gun ,,
And H&R lets poor folks like me, buy a made in the USA gun

A year run of 45ACP  - add $50 -  YES     -- And hope a 257 Robert was soon !   Or a Savage 250,  and a 30 - 40--- how about the new 6.8mm   too ,,,,  I'm thinking that in all, they would sell at least 100  Barrels  -- And I think I read that is about a run size..  How about a pink finish for the ladies one year ?

But all the testing would cost more then $5,000 ...  rats, can't they just do it

I voted for the 338 Marlin because I'd like a caliber with teeth for bear and pig without going to 45-70.  Had I read these posts earlier I would have voted for the 257 Roberts.. In a light barrel it would be great!
