Poll for special order Handi from H&R
« on: December 02, 2009, 06:53:52 PM »
So here is the deal. A distributor has to place a minimum order of two hundred (200) units for H&R to make a special run. Instead of offering your ideas for alternatives to my poll (which is sure to happen anyway, sigh) lets see if we can discover if there are actually two hundred of us who are willing to shell out the $$$ for a SINGLE CHOICE! Frankly I have my doubts, but if we can come up with an agreement I would be happy to broach the subject with Buds or some other distributor.

Right now we are not discussing configurations such as Target Classic or Ultra. This is simply a way to gauge folks choices for chambering. Configuration can come if we can even get beyond this. I have attempted to make some diverse choices in hopes of attracting enough attention, but I am not interested in debate.

What we need is a consensus, hence the poll. What we don't need are calls for: wildcat, obscure, or unsuitable chamberings. Sorry Larry, no unchambered barrels either. The liability lawyers would have a field day with that one!

The easier it is for H&R to churn a barrel out by simply altering the chamber or length, the more likely we are to see our dreams come true. Are my choices the best? Nope, not necessarily, but I have my doubts whether or not we can agree at all, and sadly, a lot of talk on forums is just that, talk. Two hundred folks could say, sure a .257 Roberts lights my fire, but we need two hundred to pay for one as well. Lets see how far we get with something as simple as this, shall we?

By the way, this is now posted with a link at nine other forums. Lets see how that works for a cross-reference.

I'm more concerned about the "style", for instance I'd like a several of those calibers, but not in a heavy, no sights barrel.
I'd like it put together like the lightweight .243 w/ the iron sights, or STURDY peep sights, not like the fragile ones on the BC.
A .45acp like that would be awesome.

I agree rio grande, but lets choose a caliber first then concentrate on style second. If we have too many choices or options to begin with we will get no where.

Which is pretty much what I expect anyway......

Fair enough. I voted .45 acp.

Can we vote two times? Oh wait, I read it again.  Make that, can we vote three times?  ;) ;D Maybe you gave us too many choices. ::)

I'll vote just once after I do a little "Eeny Meeny Miney Mo" to decide which one I like the best. ;D

Thanks for the poll, it's a great idea. I just hope we all can decide on one caliber to start with.

Thanks, Dinny

+1 .257 Bob, if so lets request it in AI.
What did you do today...for Freedom?

I voted for the 30-40 Krag.
It's a classic big game round.
It's a rimmed round and we know they work great in the Handi.
Capable of taking any big game in North America.
Factory ammo is readily available.
Think of it as a 30-06 with a rim... what could be better.

With the 357, 44, and 45 barrels offered now I don't really see the need for the 45 acp.
Nothing at all wrong with it... it just seems redundant.

There is nothing to be gained with a long barrel 30-30.
We all know they are one of the best shooters now.

I think the 338 Fed is just a fad and will fall away. :-\

The 257 Bob would be second on my personal list.
There is nothing wrong with it and I think it would sell well.
They already have 25 cal. barrels to work with so it'd be an easy manufacture.

Just my personal opinions.

1.  30-40 Krag
2.  257 Roberts
3.  Tie for all the rest

I voted for the 30-40 Krag, thinking that I'd be the only (and lonely) vote for this round.   Much to my surprise, it's tied for the lead.

Wow!   The possibility of a 30-40 Krag in a Handi . . .

Tony, neat idea,I have a Winchester high wall and Remington Rolling block reproductions in 30-40 would be neat to have BC in 30-40.I guess I am hooked on single shots for sure.  ::) So that is my vote for the cal.  Thanks Tom Ham7777  ;D

Yeah right, good luck with that. Even tho there are perhaps 5000 folks registered here who own and use handi rifles (heck maybe even more) you'll never see the day you get 200 to agree on anything. I'd bet you won't even get 200 total votes here split among them all. That's just the way it happens.

I'd be interested in the .257 Bob if it were in a Superlight contour.

I see Greybeard is still as positive as ever. Now I remember why I gave up on H&R and this site. I'm glad I got my .223 but but some of the folks on thiss very site make it hard to think I want to buy another one.

BTW M vote was for the .220 Swift.

26" 30-30?     the 22 " barrels are already some of the greatest shooters H&R makes.

My must have caliber isnt' listed so I'll still be looking to the day I can have a barrel in 303 British.

I went for the 257 Bob, Fred shouldn't have all the fun. :D  I have 2 bolts in that caliber and would be good to have a Handi in it.  NOW, what about the 338 Marlin and 35 rem? ???  I want more! ::) :P  DP

I vote for 45 ACP.  I'm still really irritated that they discontinued the 45 Colt accessory barrel and the ACP barrel would get me within a thou of where I want to go and bullets can be resized...

How about the .32-20 so that it could be rechambered to .303 Brit, 7.65 Arg or 7.7 Jap (even 7.62x54R).

It's not discontinued, just out of stock like several others, they won't be making any more until next year.

Since we won't get unchambered barrels, I would like to see the smallest cartridge chambered in each caliber.  Then we can rechamber.

NEF could make a 25-20 barrel which the user could rechamber to any other 25 caliber from 25-221 to 257 Weatherby.

I'll leave mine in 25-20. ;D

257 Weatherby.

Well not not that one as the frame can't take belted mag level thrust.

Yes I fully admit to being a glass have empty rather than half full kinda guy. I prefer to look at as being a realist. What you are seeing in the posts and the poll tho supports what I am saying. There are lots of guys here who own handis and lots who are die hard handi holics. The difficulty is that you are all individuals and what you like isn't the same which makes it almost impossible to get enough agreement on a single chambering and configuration to make it happen.

One other thing is that for each person willing to post there are maybe 100 who will read only and not get involved in posting or even voting. Truly I wish you good luck in getting what you want but realistically about the only way you're gonna get it is to pay someone like Wayne to make it for you.

Even if you got 500 votes here for one there are no names attached and no firm money in hand commitment so talking a distributor into ordering them from the poll would still be next to impossible. The profit margin is just too small for them to bother. I hate it guys but that's the reality of it like it or not even if I am an old stick in the mud.

I went with the 26" 30-30...namely because I like 26" barrels..

What I would love to see is a choice of being able to have the 26" barrel lenght for any caliber they already do..with any contour barrel they do...especially the heavy bull barrels...A 26" 270/30-06 would be awesome (got 1 of those already) no need for short mags or long mags with these.....along with a 26" bull barreled 243/308...
