I carry enough to keep me alive & comfortable for several days. The only tool I need for dressing and butchering a deer is my belt knife. My pack weighs less than 10lbs with 2 quarts of water.

I carry a rifle and 3 bullets, sometimes when its cold I carry a thermos of hot stuff, not always coffee!

Shooter, I posted a thread on another forum in backpack hunting section asking opinions on how much ammo everyone carries. I most often only carry what my weapon holds. I found that many carry 20-40 rounds. I was shocked. I originally posted the question because some of my hunting buddies were ragging on me for not carrying enough rounds in their opinion. I've never shot more than 4 in a 1 day hunt, and I dropped 3 hogs that day. Popped one twice that day to stop the squeeling and still had 5 more rounds in the tube.

I always used to think of myself as something of a minimalist when it comes to hunting and fishing, until I realized that my most important piece of equipment is a car to get me there and a freezer to keep the meat and a range to cook it and some good clothes that make sense for the conditions. Add up all the practical necessities that make hunting possible and a few extra gadgets don't seem too lavish.

I know its amazing how much ammo people tote!  I use more ammo to sight in than I do to hunt! a box will last me several years after I use six or eight to sight a rifle (with scope) in. Now that hog problem thread made me want to start carrying more but two or three shots and they will all be gone any way!

One rifle, box of ammo, Belt knife(gerber folding w/gut hook), sharpening ceramic, matches, machete or small ax, and water bottle.  For just a day hunt.

If I am spending the night a wool blanket, tarp, sleeping bag, and pad.  Along with food, water, cooking pot, pack frame.

As far as ammo goes, I use to only carry what the gun would hold.
That was before I was in a tangle with three trespassing poachers that was trying to take my game from me.
Long story short, 4 rounds in the rifle.
Used one to kill a nice doe.
One to kill a turkey that came by while I was gutting the deer.
That left me with two rounds to defend myself against three men with guns that thought they were entitled to my kills.
Don't think I would have come out on the winning end had the situation gone much farther.
I now carry nine on the stock, a 45 colt with 6 HPs and 12 extra in an ammo pouch and a small double derringer in 32 mag with HPs.
Call me crazy but in today's world, you just never know when you may have to defend yourself!

BTW, they never knew I only had 2 rounds left, and I kept my kills also!

We hunted along time ago, long johns, 2 pair of blue jeans on, a sweat shirt; flannel shirt; and a canvas hunting jacket, and a pair of Red Ball Rubber Boots that were passed down when they became to small (no camo), a 30/30 and about 5 shells, a kid got a 410 with a slug or a 45 long colt.
Gosh things were simple back then.  And probably everyone in the hunting party killed a deer.  Everyone knew the woods and at the end of the day we went home.

Then there's good equipment we don't really need. For example, I've got 2 45 target pistols. One hardly gets used. This is because I bought two that were different enough to give me a choice of preference. I prefer one over the other. So one gets shot. The other sits, but I keep it as a backup.

Normally, I hunt in woods well known to me. For big game, I dress for the weather, take a rifle and about  6 rounds max, 3 in the gun if a repeater. My knife is more often now (but not always) a folder, a drag rope, water with me or in the truck, a few paper towels and at my wife's insistance, a cell phone.
If I were hunting in a different area than around my township/county, I would pack more..but around here , that's enough.

Now when I was a kid and we'd take the old Daisy BB guns out hunting we'd leave home with about 2000 BBs each and come back with none left. Adults would do well with this ethic of taking at least 1000 rounds of 30-06 into the field with each outing. It's the sensible thing to do.  ;)

I have been hunting out of the portable ground blind for the last six years and tend to take a lot more than I used to. One of the cylinder shaped duffle bags works well to hold all items.

When I was hunting the tree stands, I would just take what I could get into outer & inner pockets which could be sparse.

Been awhile since I've been hunting. Couple extra shells for whatever gun I was carrying, knife, drag rope when deer hunting, and most important. About 30' of toilet paper rolled up in an inside pocket. gypsyman

Knife, matches, dry socks, 5 extra rounds, granola bars, water, rope, toilet paper.
Keep it all in a small pack.

I know the feeling Longtom. Once a lot of years ago I had a small racked seven point on the ground and hunting near to me were a group of four consisting of a dad, his son and daughter and a grossly fat friend who never got out of sight of the old logging road we were all hunting off.

The fat friend did his best to convince the others they should whip by butt and take the buck from me. I kinda explained that should they try I'd take as many of them out as I could with the .357 Magnum S&W I was carrying. In the end the father's wisdom prevailed and no one tried. All they would have had to do was ask nicely and I'd have gladly given it to them. I don't eat whitetail deer meat anyway so always give the meat to someone and it could have been them if they'd asked. But I'll be damned if someone is gonna whip my butt and taken anything from me without a fight that someone ain't walking away from.

Back then unlike now I was tough enough I could have fought off any two of them most likely and definitely could have gotten to the S&W if it came to it. These days I'm not able to fight or run but I can still shoot.

I'll fight sissy like if I have to, eyes, balls and ears.... and attempt to stab the person or use a blunt object.  I've been beat up on too much trying to use less lethal force (even weaklings with resolve can stand and fight a few minutes).  club and stab- get nuts like a squirrel.... bite the nuts even.  You cannot always win, but you can be sure that the aggressor is never again strong enough to do it to someone else.... if that person doesn't die of the wounds later.  At least get an eye for your trouble.

The lesser man has not the burden of maintaining his reputation- getting beaten up doesn't make you any more honest if just makes you weak AND stupid- so get that man to lay down somehow

I don't know where you hunt, and that makes a difference, but except for a lease in the Davis Mountains, I never took anything but cigs and a box of ammo.
Well, a knife.
We always had a road handy and would bring it up to take the game back to camp.
Thats a funny thought, never really considered it before, we never dressed game in the woods--always back at the camp. Hummmm. Culture.
Course the largest land I was on was only about 3000 acres.

I don't know how anyone can justify carring concealed in an urban environment but not carry outdoors where it's completely legal and there are little to no issues of collateral damage... what in the woods people won't get you, but they will with witnessed in the city?  and I can't see how anyone fees comfortable unarmed in the first place: home, church, gym, work, you name it.  if it ain't on you it needs to be a few steps away, period.

while you're probably right (you ARE still here) just remember that not all people think like that... nutty people get blinded by rage and then it's game on

as for the situational awareness, operational risk management and stuff- read my previous posts!  walk away like the better man, but if cornered then fight like a complete scoundrel, poke out eyes and maim testicles, it'll get you out of headlocks at least!  it's okay to walk away  :o  and better if you're walking away from a guy that's disfigured because you hit him with a brick or something else completely atrocious....
