Quality time with the nephew
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:18:16 PM »
My nephew asked me today if we could reload some ammo for his 45-70 Handi. I dug out the old Lee Loader and we pounded together 50 rounds. It was cool spending time with him like that. He really paid attention to what we were doing and he was very careful. I like using the Lee Loader to teach him because it's step by step and he understands what is happening with each step of the process. We both shoot trapdoor loads and we shoot 405 gr. cast bullet loads. I loaded his with 29.3 gr. of H4198. No kick (he likes that) and shoots good.  ;D

Sure takes me back to the days when a great guy at the end of our dirt road would spend time with me, teaching me all about reloading, casting, etc. I was 14, and he was the kind of mentor one could pray for. I'm sure your nephew will remember these times long after you are gone........ good on you!

Thanks for the kind words guys. He's a good kid and he really listens to what we tell him. I've given him all of his guns and tried my best to teach him the safe way to do things. He's 12 yrs. old now and shoots as well as most full grown men. I just gave him my 7.62x39 Rossi the other day after watching him shoot it. It was cool watching him tear up a bullseye with it. ;D I've tried to keep him with the tried and true calibers. He's got a 22, 22hornet, 30-30, 7.62x39, 45-70 and a 20ga.
I'd say he's off to a good start. ;D

Very kind and generous. I also have a nephew that I supply with unlimted ammo for target practice and deer hunting. He is 13 and has only one rifle, an 8mm Mauser, but so do I so it is easy.

That's good on you Spanky, spending time mentoring kids is what life is all about. Your nephew will remember all the time you've spent with him for the rest of his life.
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

---- William Pitt (the Younger), Speech in the House of Commons, November 18, 1783
