.280 REM

I am looking at purchasing one of these next year in the NEF and just wondered what they were like for accuracy with handloads and what bullets were used.

Hello,

   I have a .280 Handi with a laminated stock set and so far am satisfied with the performance on paper. No meat testing yet, but groups right around an inch with 140 gr. Hornady SST's and a medium charge of Varget. I have not taken the time to really start dialing in the loads yet, but am sure that I can achieve a true consistant 1 inch group. The .280 when loaded near max loads can approach lower level 7 Mag velocities, but I am not sure if that would be the most accurate recipe. You will just have to get one and see. I have decided to try to make my hunting load a 150 gr. SST pushed at whatever speed groups the best. This is one of the flattest and most accurate chamberings around and I think it fits a Handi rather well. Good Luck and keep us posted.

The .280 Handi is on my "Gotta Have" list.  My friend and neighbor has one that he couldn't get to group well.  All I did was plunk an "O" ring on the forend and clean the latch shelf.  .......one ragged hole at 100.  Sighted at 200, it has a very minimal drop at 300.  I gotta love that baby for the across the field shots we get here.

I had one, and after trying several brands of ammo, I found one that shot .5-.75" at 50 yards.  I never shot it any further before I sold it, but I am sure with a bit of work it would have been an honest MOA gun at 100 yards.  The long 26" barrel gives you excellent ballistics, nipping at the heels of the 7mm Rem mag.  It is definitely underrated, and until H&R makes a true magnum frame, the standard .280 Handi will work just fine ;D

Just for the sake of comparison check out the ballistics on a 270 win. Both are great cartridges If you don't own one of either the 270 has a slight edge on lighter bullets (up to 150 grs) and the 280 on the heavy ones (160-175), however the game on the North American Continent will not know the difference. Get the one you like and you will be well equipped for anything ;D

While not handloads...these 2 factory loads out of the 280 I owned showed me it is worth getting one..





Kinda pointless to handload on one shooting like this for me..

Might need to work on that one to get rid of the flyer ;D, I think it's a golden one.  I agree with ya Mac, Not worth lookin' for tighter groups when ya got 2 that will do that.  Guess I better drag mine out of the back of the safe and do some more playing.  To many toys, not enough time. :P  DP
