Math question
« on: December 04, 2009, 12:03:52 AM »
If I know the weight and velocity of a bullet, is there a way I can figure out chamber pressure?

you can get a compairison but not the pressure. glock says do not shoot lead bullets in their guns with pologonal rifling and I have a cz82 with the same setup and i fired a cast bullet and a lead bullet thru the crony and compaired the speed and decided that the lead was a lot faster so pressure must be way up  and decided not to shoot cast in the cz82 either.

Then you sir would be mistaken. Lead is faster not because pressures are higher but just the opposite. There is less resistance as a lead bullet goes down the barrel vs a jacketed bullet. This results in lower pressue and higher velocity. There is no direct correlation between pressure and velocity.

The reason you aren't supposed to shoot lead bullets in barrels with polyagonal rifling is because lead builds up faster in polyagonal rifling, which can cause excessive leading, which can subsequently lead to a kaboom.  Almost all of the Glock KBs were from people shooting lead bullets through their Glocks.

OK, so how do I know if any of my pistols have pologonal rifling?  Does anybody besides Glock use it?

Friend of mine has a Glock 17, has shot thousands of cast bullets thru it. 'Course he cleans it when he gets thru shooting it. That might help. gypsyman

I know that H&K uses this type in their handguns and Pac-Nor does some custom rifle barrels too .
