The P-H 1200C in 25-06..with photos
« on: December 04, 2009, 11:31:21 PM »
Hi All,

Well I finally picked it up yesterday afternoon and took some photos this morning:-

I put a Simmons 6-18x40AO Competition scope in those Leupold rings. Robbed it off the BSA Supersport Five as with the 6x42 I intended fitting to this 25-06 could not achieve the correct eye relief due to it's shorter body tube. The stock has a few little marks which I will steam out at some point and I will give it a fresh oiled finish to replace the oiled finish it has now. In the past doing so has highlighted the figure of the grain and hopefully it will do so with this one  ;D.

Ok got to test fire and sight in this morning, bit of a breeze from the left but nice bright sun. Started off at 50 yards then moved back to 70 yards, trying two lots of factory ammo that I brought when we collected the rifle. Ammo is Federal Premium 100 Grn Nosler Ballistic Tip and Sako Gamehead 117 Grn. Sako went first:-

#1 went high so I adjusted it down 24 clicks and shot again. #2 was still to high so brought it down again and #3 hit the 0.78" (20mm) black spot then tried the Federal hmmm low left and not much of a group for 50 yards. back to 70 yards:-

The Federal with the Nosler went low left and might indicate a bedding issue as it's wide but not so tall then came the Sako 117 Grn and yep I can live with that a 3 shot group 1/2" of POA making a group of 9/16". Once the finances recover slightly I will pick up another couple of boxes of this Sako ammunition   ;)

I will try the Federal out tomorrow on the range at 75 metres and see if I can do better with it looks like we found a nice rifle after all  ;D.

Beautiful rifle and great performance (accuracy). I'd say it's a keeper. Once you use it prepared to be spoiled by the performance.

That rifle's a beauty Brit!!  Be sure to show us some muntjac or fallow when you use it on game (fallow being my favorite!)

Thank you both  ;D yes I am rather pleased with it although I cannot really tell the difference in shooting it to my .270's, recoil and jump feel about the same  ??? and I do rather like the .270 Winchester cartridge so there is no reason not to grow to like this one  ;).

Perhaps someone upstairs was smiling on me after the problem with the P-H Model 1000 .243  8) I don't ususally use that Guntrader.UK website even though I knew about it a quick search on Google found it and I began to search originally for a .243. It was only after I expanded the search and included the 25-06 chambering that I found this one and even then it was a toss up between this one and an P-H M81 in .270 however I am very glad to have chosen this one .................. Now  ;D

Ahhh if I can swing the finances that is I am in discussion with a feller in Perthshire, Scotland, about going up in Febuary after Roe Does and of course Fallow are still in season then so depending on what we find  ;) there is a 1000 acres on his Roe patch and I'll bet some Fallow too. There may be a chance to drop into Norfolk after Fallow and Roe which is a lot nearer to me and it's an option I am looking into  ;) I need to replenish the supply of venison.

Now I'll admit that I will most likely change the scope once I can afford to. These Simons competition models have a rather narrow depth of Field  ::). The test shots were fired with it on 10x magnification and the AO had to be set at 28 yards to get the target in focus properly at 70 yards. The AO is calibrated to be used at 18X magnifiaction when it can used as a range finder as I believe they were meant for the Field Target Shooters (Air weapons) it actually has Air Gun engraved into the AO ring. Had a look and put up the BSA Hunter next to it which has a new Simmons Master series 3-10x44 scope on it and I would say it would fit a treat so perhaps I can acquire another one of them but I would like to check the one I already have out a bit more first  ;).

Hmmm I am sorry to say that Sunday's range session with the same ammunition prooved dissapointing to say the least  :-[. I will have another attempt once I get another box of ammunition but in the meantime I changed that scope. It meant a little chopping and changing but now this Parker-Hale 1200C wears a Pecar Berlin 3-7x36. This is the old moving reticle design so the Leupold mounts with the windage jam screws suit it well. It was on my BSA CF2 Stutzen in Hilver mounts before I swopped it over. The Simmons Air Gun scope is back on the BSA .22 L/R where it came from  ;)

I feel it will suit this rifle well and it means no mucking about with the AO to get the beast in focus  ;)

Great piece of wood on that one, it's interesting the approval process you must go thru to obtain such a beautiful firearm. I saw a number of P-H's at a local Cabelas, must have been a collection, although none looked as nice as this one.

I have 2 P-H 25-06 and 308.  Been using the 25-06 for deer hunting for the past 10 years very accurate rifle.  I take the 308 out at least once during the season.

Thank you all for your kind comments  ;D once the weather warms up I will do a re-finish on the stock to highlight the grain more and remove the few small compression marks it has. Meanwhile I am testing some handloads in it and we appear to be heading in the right direction now with it  ;).

Britguy -

That's a great looking rifle!  I"ll bet with a minimum of tuning and load development it will be an even better shooter (although its good enough now).

Thank you Coyote Hunter,

No tuning on the rifle, only on the loads  ;) only if it proves impossible to get the required accuracy will the rifle itself be tweeked and if that becomes required it will be a re-bed but retaining the barrel pressure point bedding at the fore stock tip  :) I am not enamoured with the free floated barrel idea  :-X .

For me the required accuracy is 3/4" or under at 70 yards, next year I intend to move my backstop to allow the range to be increased to 150 yards for better testing. I put up a straw wall for practicing my archery originally and then decided to slightly modify it and use it for ammunition testing as well ................... as you do  :P  ;). I will also build a shooting platform so I have a stable and level shooting position for 100 yard mark. It will serve a dual purpose as we are planting our field with trees and shrubs. Meanwhile a new Simmons 2.8-10 X 44 Aetec Master Series scope is on the way which in hope will suit this rifle even better than the 6x40 I have on it at the moment.

Britguy -

I think you'll like that Simmons Aetec - my hunting buddy and I both have them (2.8-10x) on our 7mm RM's.  Not too expensive but clear and bright.

All my rifles have free-floated barrels - keeps the POI from changing over time due to changes in temp, humidity, etc., but can also increase goup size a little, but any such increase has been insignificant.

At any rate, have fun with your new toy and keep us posted on the results.

I will try to do so, keep you informed that is  :).

I doubt I will see the Aetec this side of Christmas now no doubt the snow will be the excuse for the delay. It was posted today 1st class so it should be delivered by Christms Eve. It's all down to the Post office now so we will have to wait and see. It has about 300 miles to come to get here.

I was not keen on the Simmons scopes as they had lots of problems some years ago. My local (then, have moved since then) gunshop stopped stocking them due to the amount of returns. However a year or so ago I brought a couple of used Simmons 6-18x40AO Air Gun competition scopes and was pleased with them  :) then after acquiring the BSA Hunter in .222 Rem I brought this Pro Hunter Master Series at the suggestion of a couple of friends in the US and so far I am happy with it but have only had it for about a month or so.

Well the Aetec did arrive before Christmas but yesterday I took it off as it's faulty so it's going back  :'( I don't know how this one slipped through the zoom ring is so stiff it's like it's seized up and yesterday the elevation adjustment froze up add to that the fact that it's got awful parallax. I thought the fliers were down to me but when trying to fine tune the focus it was noticed that if my eye moved position even slightly the reticle danced around on the target. so basically I have wasted nearlt 3/4's of a box of bullets tryign to eliminate these fliers which have been due to this problem  ::) I am not a happy chappie  >:(

I agree that the view is bright and clear but on this aprticular scope I could not get the cars sharply in focus. The are parked a few hundred yards away on a neighbours place. Have e-mailed the vendor and will be phoning them this morning about it.

Ahh well it's coming along but was slowed a lot with the scope issues  ::). I finally robbed the Schimdt & Bender 6x42 off another rifle and put it on the Parker-Hale. I have had some changes in POI but I have trying some different things. One thing that has come to light is that in this colder weather the 120 Grn Speer over 48.0 gr of Reloader 19 with a CCI 200 primer gives an occasional hang fire  ??? So I have dropped the charge to 47.0 grn and switched to a CCI 250 magnum primer and am testing that now. The best grouping so far is these:-

This was to see if the POI moved as it warmed up with the extra weight of the Sound Moderator on the barrel. The first three shots went into 0.532" it then walked down the target. I fired 9 shots and then took the mod off and fired one at another target with it off to check the change in POI and it's quite noticable. Oh I moved the distance back to 100 yards  ;).

Sadly the Aetec was faulty as was it's replacment hence robbing the S&B off another rifle. I have a Redhead Visao 3-12x42 that the vendor has sent me to try out. Passpro has dropped them so I can only assume these have come from the Chinese factory as Basspro doesn't want them  ??? however I can see some of it's problems as the eyebell is so large that it requires high mounts for bolt clearence and it won't fit a lot of my rifles without obtaining different mounts. I managed to get it to go on amy Brno ZKK 601 .308 using a pair of Hilver rings but it really needs a cheek pad on the butstock to raise the comb now.

Filling forms and jumping through hopps is what it's like. Then it's like banging your head against a brick wall.

It shouldn't be like this but the Police make up their own rulesa s they go along and as the Police administer the licensing system. To go fully into it would take several pages ................ get the picture.

After seeing you had to switch to CCI mags. ....... I'm glad I started with magnum primers right away ...... Remington 9 1/2 M's in my case.

I am burning RL 22 pushing 100 gr. Nosler Ballistic tips out of a Savage 110 I just did a barrel swap on ........ the lightest bullet I could find in town for coyotes.

I have never had to use them before when using Reloader 19 and I have used it in the .270 Winchester cartridge so it rather surprised me however it should not have done really as a lot of the reading up about the 25-06 that I had done says it's a magnum in all but name.

With the H4350 loads I also tried the Magnum primer but that pushed the pressure up too high so I stopped using them. It was suggested that they might help so I tried them. It was lucky that I had some in as I rarely use them now having traded off the Ruger No1 in .300 Win mag some years back and I don't shoot the .458 very often so..............

Some cartridges are nigh on unobtainbable here such as the 6mm Remington  ::) I am fortunate that my sort of local shop stocks 25 cal bullets and even several types of 25-06 ammunition. The nearest one which is 10 miles away at the gun club dies not stock any .25 cal stuff at all. Let alone 6.5x53R or 6.5x54MS even 8mm Mauser is not popular so therefore it's hard to get decent commercial ammo for it.

If 6mm Rem is one of your calibers that you work with and you need brass I would make if from another casing.

I am doing this with my .270 win for my .25-06 build in a Savage 110.

And there are benefits in doing that.  In my case, I bought this .270 for CHEAP and it's once fired Remington right from the factory so I know it has not even hit the ground as it went straight into a cardboard box indoors.

Also, I outside neck turn and an extra thousands on the neck thickness ensures enough "meat" to allow evening up without getting too thin and losing neck tension on a loaded bullet.

I prefer Imperial Die was for the lubrication for these endeavors.

And I find that the most wear and tear is if you don't lube the inside of the neck a little ...... not in the initial necking down.

My 8mm Mauser comes from a ton of .30-06 casings I have hoarded and a borrowed trim die helps save wear and tear on my case trimmer.
