I need 30-30 AI data for a Contender.
« on: December 05, 2009, 07:10:29 AM »
I posted this request up in the T/C Contender section but no one has replied to it.

I just ordered a 14" barrel for my Contender in 30-30 Ackley Imp 40* and am in need of some loading information.
I would like to know the powders that have worked best for you with 125 Nosler BT. In your experience what were the specific loads that you used? Of course I would work up to these loads but I just need a starting place so I don't have to spend a lot of time and money trying to find a load. This will be used for deer hunting. I am a very experienced reloader and have experience with wildcats but there is not a lot out there on the 30-30AI.

I don't have a 30-30 AI, but I do have some load data for the cartridge.  I'll PM it to you rather than post it here.  There is a good bit of information at loaddata.com, but you must join in order to use the information.  It's only $29.95/year.  Well worth it because there are THOUSANDS of loads that have been tested for nearly anything you can think of.

In a pinch you can shoot standard 30-30 loads in your AI, and you can fire regular 30-30 cartridges as well.  They will fire-form to make AI's.  The velocity will not be as fast as the AI, but will work.

WW748 with the 125BT.

Start at 30-30 book max and work up.  WLR primer works best for me in my 30-30s.

    I found this on Specialty pistols forum

might need this to be easily found in the future.....so.....

some interesting looking reduced load data...........
http://www.gmdr.com/lever/3030a170_dat.htm

.....and handgun data from different sources of shooters shooting a handful of different barrels with similar results recieved between them. "shortgun" was a major contributor. a couple additions each were chipped in by 2-3 other shooters as well.

I've used Varget in my 30-30 AI in the past (I no longer own the barrel.....).

In my barrel, Varget was the powder of choice with the Nosler 150 BT in the 30-30 AI. Barrel was a re-chamber 30 Herrett, 14" long with a 1:10 twist.

My load(s):
30-30 AI
R-P brass case
F210M primer
Nosler 150 BT @ 2.890" OAL
37.5 gr Varget
no chrono data
3 shots @ 100 meters = 0.362" (one 3-shot group)

30-30 AI
R-P brass case
F210M primer
Nosler 150 BT @ 2.890" OAL
40.0 gr Varget
Chrono = 2386 fps average
18.3 Std Dev
64 Extreme Spread
12 Average Deviation
1.058" average group size for four (4) 3-shot groups at 100 meters.

In my barrel, neither of the two loads listed above exhibited any pressure signs. However, please follow safe loading procedures and work up in your barrel, watching for pressure signs.

Regards,

Here is some more using Varget in the 30-30 AI from my recent chrono session yesterday. The barrel is 14" Bulberry bbl on G2 frame.Brass is Winchester. Primer used was CCI#200 large rifle.
37.5 gr is a nearly compressed load in Winchester brass and 38.0 is definitely a compressed load so I went no further than 38.0.

150 gr Nosler BST/37.5 gr Varget
1.2312fps
2.2372
3.2306
4.2316
5.2333
AVG=2328fps ES=66 SD=26
Very accurate, mild load.

150gr Nosler BST/38.0 gr Varget
1.2372fps
2.2326
3.2320
4.2339
5.2336
AVG=2339 ES=52 SD=12
Also very accurate, but not much gain in velocity.

150 gr Nosler Solid Base/37.5 Varget
1.2308fps
2.2298
3.2331
4.2314
5.2306
AVG=2312 ES=33 SD=12
Again very accurate(one small hole), mild shooting load.

150 gr Nosler Solid Base/38.0 Varget
1.2400fps
2.2358
3.2365
4.2346
5.2354
AVG=2365 ES=54 SD=21
Very accurate, but 37.5 gr load was better.

I will probably use 37.7 gr Varget so if I vary + or - .1 grain it won't effect velocity or point of impact to any appreciable degree.

I am not Gene.  :D That was just one of the guys that I copied that data from that posted some of the load data. I got my MGM 30-30AI barrel today ;D . It is sweet looking. Now if this snow storm will just pass and melt off so I can get to the range to shoot it.
