SEC Championship Game!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: December 05, 2009, 01:52:31 PM »
What a great game! Two of the best teams in the absolute hands down best conference in the country!
Listen up every other conference in the country! YOU STINK! None of you are even in the same
hemisphere as the teams from the SEC. You definately need to work on your game to even be allowed in the same stadium as the teams from the SEC! They have the best teams, the best players, and by far
they have the most exciting games for the fans to watch. Congrats to The University Of Alabama!
You guys rock!

I'm orig. from Arkansas, so I do root (pun intended) for the SEC ;D

Watch out for the Razorbacks next year .
I agree the SE conf. is the strongest in the nation, and has been for several years. That said! I'm now a Quacker backer now (Oregon fan) that is!, I've lived here for 40 yrs, and I believe the Ducks right now could play with anyone in the SEC, with the exception of Ala, and Fla.

Watch them as they kick crap from Ohio State in the Rose Bowl :)

Congrats to Alabama from an Auburn fan. Now go win the national championship and bring it home to the state. Tebow is still a class act but it just wasn't his time again this year. When Alabama couldn't go to the big dance last year I pulled for Florida against Oklahoma so the SEC could bring it home. I agree with an earlier posting, the SEC is the strongest conference on college football. If we can get past beating each other up and play a team from another conference to win the national championship then that pretty much says it all.

Bob, I'll bet the Big Ten Conference has more National Championships than the SEC, and I'll bet the Ivy League has the most. ;)

Highwayman,

I think you're trying to say or exclaim that the SEC has won the most bowl games throughout history? Well, yes, sort of, the SEC has indeed won the most bowl games, at least by the way they figure it anyway. But some conferences historically only let the winner of their conference participate in a bowl game. All other teams in the conference went home. For example, up until 1976 the Big Ten only allowed the Big Ten Champ to play in the Rose Bowl, the rest of the Big Ten Conference teams went home. So, we'll never know, but, had all the teams of the Big Ten that deserved a bowl bid throughout history been offered one like in the SEC, the numbers might be quite different. Just think of all the great teams from the Big Ten that did not get to play in a bowl game from 1902 until 1976. I just have this feeling that had they a chance to go to the bowls, the SEC would be trailing way behind the Big Ten in total bowl games won. But like I said, we'll never know. ;)

The south takes college football seriously.

Top 20 college football stadiums:

7 of the top 20 stadiums are SEC teams.
Big 10 has 4
Big 8 has 4 (two in Texas)
ACC has 2 (FSU and Clemson, both in the south)
Pac 10 has 2
Notre Dane is the only independent

So the south takes college football seriously.

Oh Jeez, kynardsj, this is no can of worms. This is nothing but a very nice, fun, and respectful little conversation about our favorite college football conferences. Go look at some of the other current topics being discussed on the " 'Ole Pot-Bellied Stove" forum for a "can of worms." I thought this thread was actually very relaxing. Just saying...

Well Yeah Dixie Dude, the SEC takes football seriously, but from the article that you posted, it appears that the Big Ten takes its football equally, if not even more seriously given the article's premise that "seriousness" of college football is based on stadium capacity.

Of the the 4 Big Ten stadiums that are listed in the article, 3 of those stadiums are in the top four, in 1st, 2nd, and 4th.

I'd say that both the SEC and the Big Ten take football seriously, right along with the Pac 10, the Pac 12, and the ACC.

First off ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!  Way to put the stomp stomp on the chomp chomp!  I am always a sucker for a man who can show emotion, and I loved me some Tebow tears!  Bama came ready to play and I think Florida underestimated them.  We were ready for Tebow this year and stopping him forced Florida to re-strategist and it didn't' go so well for them.

I am no football expert by any stretch of the imagination, but anyone with eyes could clearly see the huge difference in level of skill in the SEC championship game and the Texas/Nebraska game last night.  I am eager to see the Crimson Tide roll over Texas!!!!!!!!  GO BAMA!

Skunk,
I don't care what happened back in 1932. I'm talking about 2009. Right now. Today. If I sit down and watch
a SEC game on TV it's almost guaranteed to be a good one. They play at almost another level compared to
most of the other conferences in my opinion. Putting aside your favorite team and looking objectively at it you
can't deny that SEC has a lot of teams, players, and coaches with some incredible talent. Right now, like it or
not, they happen to be at the top of the game.

Oh. Well, I do Bob.

Right now. Today. If I sit down and watch a SEC game on TV it's almost guaranteed to be a good one. They play at almost another level compared to most of the other conferences in my opinion.

That's because you probably only watch SEC games. Look around the league a little and open your eyes. There's a whole football world out there, just waiting for you Bob. ;) I watch some of the SEC games, and I'm not all that impressed with their play. I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. I see that same thing you see in all good games. They don't have to be just SEC games. ::)

Putting aside your favorite team and looking objectively at it you can't deny that SEC has a lot of teams, players, and coaches with some incredible talent. Right now, like it or not, they happen to be at the top of the game.

Now Bobby, I've never denied that. But you are truly the one that needs to heed your own advice. To say that the Big Ten, the Pac 10, the Pac 12, the ACC, or any of the numerous conferences out there all "Stink," and don't have "a lot of teams, players, and coaches with some incredible talent," is, well, just plain stupid Bob, not to mention rather insulting to anyone who is a fan of a different conference.

Beerbelly, I just had to take you up on that one. ;)

Here is a list of every SEC player who played more than 2 games for the Packers during the Lombardi era (1959-1968). The SEC contributed 14 players (some very notable)to the "Glory Days." I'm not a big 10 fan, or a SEC fan, but you have to give the SEC credit where credit is due. The last couple of years the SEC has been without a doubt the best conference. The big 10 won one bowl game last year and that was Iowa beating SC.  Ohio state had one notable tough opponent to play this year in USC (if you want to call USC good this year) and they lost to them. They also lost to Purdue.
Penn State is just not a good team. Not among the best anyway. They tend to get more credit than due because of Joe Paa. Although I do root for Penn St. I work with a guy whose Son is a starter on defense. I did hate to see them leave the Big East. The old Pitt and Penn st. games were great.
The Big 10 has had some good football teams in the past, but if you are talking the last two years its hands down SEC. Teams in the SEC just seem to have more team speed than teams in other conferences. Its the reason Florida beat up Ohio St. last year. Ohio St. looked like they were playing in slow motion.

DDZ,

I don't deny that a bit. I have absolutely nothing against the teams of the SEC. In fact, The Tide and the Hogs are always on my favorites list. I just don't agree that all teams from all other conferences "stink" like was mentioned by Bob.

Back years ago Penn State and Alabama really had some great games. Being an Auburn fan the ones that almost gave me a heart attack was back in the early to mid 80's when Florida State played Auburn.

Skunk, I know you were not denying the fact that the SEC is strong this year, I was just stating my opinion.

There are a couple  good Big10 and SEC bowl match ups. Penn St. and LSU play in the Capitol one bowl, and Iowa and Georgia Tech in the Orange bowl.
I do like Ohio States chances against Oregon in the rose bowl. Terrelle Pryor's best football is ahead of him.

Pitt losing to Cincy by one point cost them a Sugar bowl bid, They scored 44 points and lost,  but neither Pitt nor Cincy can compete with Florida. Pitt or Cincy do not have what you would call a defense.  The Big East lacks what the Big 12, Big 10, and SEC have.

It wasn't intentional Beerbelly. It happened because I didn't realize that Tulane, and Georgia Tech for that matter, had once been members of the SEC. Max McGee went to Tulane and that School was in the SEC until 1966, so Max does indeed qualify for our little experiment. Good catch Beerbelly, you are on the top of your game today. ;)

Tulane (1)

1. McGee, Max 1954, 57-67

That leaves the possible players from Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech was a member of the SEC until 1964 and 2 players played for the Packers during the Lombardi Era.

Georgia Tech: (2)

1. Curry, Bill 1965-66
2. Henry, Urban 1963

So the SEC ends up with 17 players instead of 14. But you said I missed "quite a few SEC players." I think I've got everyone of them now after finding out about Tulane and Georgia Tech. Seriously, if you know of any others, please let me know as this is becoming a fun little adventure via computer for me. I know, I need a life. ;D

Skunk,
I think it will come down to Miami having to stop the Wisconsin running game which has been pretty good this year with John Clay. I think its Wis. with the better running game and Miami with the better passing game. Other than that I think they are fairly evenly matched teams. Although, Miami has become turnover prone the last part of the season. If I had to pick a winner in this one, I would pick Wisconsin.
