1909 Argentine Mauser 30-06
« on: December 06, 2009, 05:51:26 PM »
What kind of accuracy can be expected of 1909 Argentine mauser sporters in 30-06?  I believe that the barrels were originally for 7.65 Argentine (31 caliber) and then re-chambered to 30-06 (30 caliber).  If I buy one of the military sporters should I plan on replacing the barrel?

Unless you plan to shoot cast bullets, try it first with both commercial and handloaded jacketed bullets.   You may be pleasantly surprised.

If it were mine and I was going to replace the barrel, I'd go .308 Win. or another cartridge of similar length, even so far as to go with a take-off 7.65mm Arg. barrel.  That cartridge is very underrated.

Check the headspace on it.  My uncle had one years ago that was rechambered improperly and had excessive headspace.  I don't mean just a little excessive, either.  It was excessive to the point of being dangerous.  He wound up selling it to someone looking for a project gun.

Other than that, I'd say Gerry N.'s advice is sound.

Edited to fix my misreading of posters.

Might try reloading with bullets made for larger bores such as .311. Slug the barrel first and try to find bullets of the right diameter.

I have one that is rebarreled to 25-05 (Shilen barrel) and shoots wonderfully. The '09 Arg is a really good, well made, well finished M98 action.

Good luck with yours.

a gunsmith checked the headspace.  I will try to see how it groups and check the velocity on a chronograph.  If there are problems I will probably re-barrel since I have another 30-06 and don't want to mix ammo.

Use any of the .311/.312 bullets and it should shoot quite well.  An excellent cartridge.

Thanks for the replies.  I will slug the 30-06 re-chambered Argentine barrel.  I  also have a 7.65 Arg military barrel sporter that shoots really well so there is no reason using .311 or .312 bullets should not help the 30-06.  It is 15 below so it may be awhile before I get out shooting.  Thanks again.
