Interesting collection, the ruler shown is two feet long
« on: December 07, 2009, 12:39:56 AM »
Here's a collection I saw yesterday; bought two pieces out of it, the 4 ga. commercially-made b/l cannon and the old m/l salute gun with eagle cast into the carriage.  Remember the ruler is two feet long.  The 4 ga. is extensively marked but don't have pix of the marks yet-as I recall it is a Barney and Bailey "Reliable" pat. 1902.  The breech works by lever action.

Great buy! That's an interesting signal gun, Cannonmn, I've never seen a breech like that. I can see where the lanyard attaches; how does that firing mechanism work?
That salute cannon that breaks in the middle is also interesting; what is the insert for, and is that a commecially manufactured gun?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The insert sleeves it down from a shotgun blank to a .45-70 rifle blank, if you don't need as much noise at some point.  The pair is a two-off, never seen another pair.  I did see this pair for sale maybe 30 years ago and I recall them from that time, before present owner got them.  There is one He!! of a lot of work in those things.  The firing mech works by retracting the loop in back and turning it 1/4 turn to cock, then 1/4 turn in opp. dir. releases the internal hammer which strikes the floating firing pin.  They are certainly unique, but just like the first time I saw them, not something for me.  The little fork tools on the side of each piece are to extract either shotgun shell or adapter.

On the other question of how the f.m. works, there's a long lanyard lever which rotates a cam on a shaft against a clockspring.  The opposing camshaft, also on clockspring, has a long, bent, snout-type hammer, which trips when cam travels to release point.  Or so it appears at first glance anyway.

Here are some pix of a 3 GA. "Reliable" saluting cannon by Barney and Berry of Springfield, MA.  The one in the pix looks to have been refinished.

$3850. as-is, where is.   That is of course a repro, doesn't appear to be sleeved, looks like 1960's or so, Barney's?

Do you know anything about the bronze gun that has a liner that looked pinned in with three pins at the muzzle ?

He wants some $8800. for that rig, so he'll either die with it or lower the price a lot.  It is very well made, has machinist's fingerprints all over it, from stainless vent liner to that way of fixing the liner at the front.  Tube weighs about 170 lbs. looked to be about a 2" bore.  It is built heavily enough that IMO it doesn't matter whether the YNFM casting is brass or bronze.  The carriage is very solid.  If I were interested in that I'd want to pay maybe a few $K, not what he's asking.  The linstock is pretty neat, too.

Cannonmn,
Would you happen to know what the name of the manufacturer of this 12 gauge signal/salute gun is? I've seen 6 or 7 of them up for auction at different times, but I've never seen the makers name given. The barrels on some are bronze and on others steel, but the breeches are always steel, and have an interupted thread. The carriages and wheels are iron, and on most are painted bright colors, they usually sell for near a thousand or a little higher.

There are no marks on those guns, I've got one in the basement, or had one anyway.  I've shot it; it works!  I don't think mine is in as smooth a condition as the one pictured, mine's been used.  I think to find the name you'd probably need to find the patent, if the inventor patented it.  He may not have bothered, since there's no patent mark on the gun either, at least as far as I recall.
