Beagles, but my English Springer Spaniel did really good too.  Learned to "read" him and tell the difference between bird and bunny.  Plus he brought them to hand.

Like mentioned above, the Beagle brings the rabbit back to you so "you" can shoot it.

The beagle just follows the rabbit, keeping him moving.  He'll come back to where you jumped him.  Since the springers don't bark on track, they stand a decent chance of catching them, and then they'll bring them back to you.  Funny thing tho, my Springer WOULD NOT hunt with the beagles.  Tried it a couple of times and he was content to just hang out with us.

I too vote for beagles, though I don't have any right now, sure do miss having a couple but I recently moved to a place with more room so I may have to add a couple come spring.  Also Beniah some sporting goods stores and dog training equipment places rent trainig collars for those who have only a very short term need for one, that might be an option for you.

beagles, end of question. As for those who think circles for cottontails are only 35 yards I regularly have runs out of hearing & back to the gun. Last weekend my 2 males ran a cottontail 2 hours & 3 minutes, 7 full circles, 3 out of hearing & then progressivly smaller circles until I shot it at 10 yards just hoping thru. Both dogs ran the line right to the bunny & my youngest one retrieved it for me. There are many different kinds of beagles, I like lots of nose & line control & good speed. Yes, they will occasionally catch one on the jump or wear one down & catch it.  Mike
