A rancher friend of mine is having a hard time with coyotes getting his calves in his cow pastures and asked me to help him out. He has a barn that he puts cows in that are having trouble calving and the coyotes even come in there at night and kill calves.
He buys and sells dozens of cattle a month and usually has a dead one or two, so I picked a spot to park'em, and I can literally spot'em from the yard, and shoot'em from the Jeep. Got a big male today at about 200 yards. Carcass was too close and I spooked him, but they have to take that last look before they leave, and that's what got'em. So we moved the carcass of the cow where the coyote fell. Perfect range.
Life is good yes? Don't even have to get cold or wet.
Oh, and by the way, they won't come to a call here, I've tried. Their used to beef, and lots of it.
Am I cheatin? Yea, I'm cheatin, and it's a hoot. ;) I'll start takin a camera, and someone can show me how to post the pictures of this set up.

the way i see it is that when they are killing livestock all the rules go out the window its not a sport anymore.

It may be lazy sport, but it sure is fun. The coyotes down here in this part of Texas have generally started hunting more in larger pack now kinda like wolves. This particular bunch I have delt with a couple of years ago. The food supply is so good, they have big litters, and don't have to range much, so their death natural death rate is low. The pack every year or two gets too big, and he calls me.
There was just the one this mornin but, he was an exceptionally big male in very good shape. I'll try to start getting some pictures. These coyotes are because of the food supply bigger than average for my area, but I don't think there are any dog crosses in the bunch.

Way to go Dee!!  We do the same thing in Kansas.  We have found if you place the carcess close to cover or where they feel safer they come in much earlier than if it is in the open.   I figure no matter how you whack a coyote it feels just as good.  Plus you are rewarded with that "thwack" when you give them their parking ticket.

I love collecting pictures of coyotes that have been shot.... I know this is a twisted evil, but I love seeing how the bullets nail them song dogs.

A guy over on another forum board, sells predator teeth pendants and keychains.  I can't post the link here but if you email or PM me I can hook you up.

I got another this morning. I was hoping to get two, but the big female ran the other off. I got her with a mouthfull of beef, and she fell on the cow. If I could figure out how to post pics I would, but I follow directions and come up short. I'm gonna have to get someone on the phone to walk me thru.

Call me one evening Dee and I'll have my post a picture lady walk you thru it! She has to explain it to me every time I do it! She is also the cook around here and the general manager as well!

I think if I could walk thru it once, with someone, I could do it the next time. Maybe.

Dee,
It is actually quite simple.   When you reply you will notice a "attach option" under additional options.
You will then see a browse button on the right.  When you click on this you will see a drop down menu.  This is basically asking you where you have stored or where the photo is.  If for instance the photo is named "beef coyote" and it is stored on your desktop you can click on desktop and then look for the photo named beef coyote.  You then double click on the photo with this name and it will attach it to your post. You will want to see on your computer where the photo is located.  Perhaps it is in documents. You would then click the browse button and scroll down to documents- click on the same and scroll until you find your photo.
Many photos have numbers etc and are hard to remember what they are until you open them.  If you want to rename a photo just right mouse click on the photo and a drop down menu will appear.  Click on "rename" and you can rename the photo anything you want for easy access.
Hope this helps!

Kansasj, as simple as mud. Thanks, and sorry for the blurr, my batteries were low. It's a fat female, and she was heavy and well fed. Not much of a shot at 100 yards but, still a hoot to shoot.

I've been huntin em since about 1969, and calling them in is more fun, but hey. It's raining almost everyday and has been for months. This I do out the Jeep window. It'll eventually run dry, but the cattleman told me today he thought he had about 18 or 19 coyotes living off him at any one time.

Gonna throw out a dummy's suggestion here.  Could a fella try poisening near the buildings, but out of reach of the livestock?  Here in iowa we had a huge problem with raccoons this summer and guys got to mixing something called golden marlin (a fly poisen, maybe?) and mountain dew. They said pour it in a pan and the coons wouldn't get ten feet away. Just a thought.

Congrats Dee. I had an old Coyote Hunter tell me one time that all is fair when killin Coyotes. He went on to say that Coyotes don't play by the rules so why do we need to.

I have had the good fortune to call in and shoot 6 Coyotes and a Red Fox this fall. I think every Coyote in the country around here has heard a Rabbit Call. This year I have called in all 6 with nothing more than a bulb type mouse squeaker. I did use a Crit'R'Call Mini Predator Open Reed Mouth Call on the Red Fox and he came like a bum to a free meal.

Keep up the good work.

Larry

I used to use a Harris bi pod, if that's what your askin, but too heavy, and limited. I use a set of telescoping shooting sticks that go from a less than sitting position length to a stand and shoot length. Best I have ever used.

Well, I should have hit my bait last night, but the wind is howling here and I went to bed. Nothing this morning but, when I drove down and checked my bait ole Bossie was about gone. There had to have been at least 4 to 6 coyotes on it last night. Maybe I can post this pic.

SD Handgunner, I shoot an M4 Bushmaster, with a Leupold Vari-XII 2X7, with a flip up aperture rear sight for backup. My load is a 52 grain match hollow point loaded by Blackhills, and I use it on everything from coyotes to hogs. It will shoot under an inch with a bigger scope on it so I can see.

Sounds like a slice of heaven to me Dee. Here we have trouble calling them too. I have found a good response to howling though.

Dee, I too shoot a Bushmaster 16" M4 but mine is the Optics Ready Carbine without any open sights. Mine wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 1.5x4.5x32mm Firefly Riflescope. I use a Handload consisting of 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with H-4895 in Military Brass with either Remington #7 1/2 or CCI-400 Primers. Accuracy in generally 1/2" to 3/4" at 100 yards from the bench with yours truly being the limiting factor.

Good luck with the Coyotes.
