357 max question

Hi All

Any of you fellows have any experiance with using 357 mag ammo in the max barrel or 38 special.

I know there is a problem with 45LC in the 410 combo barrei ie 45/410 not being very accurate.

Deacon, I spent the afternoon at a private range in Texas a few years ago shooting a contender pistol with a 10" 357max barrell on it. All the ammo I shot was 357mag reloads and it was very easy hitting the gong at 200yds with it. Actually it was almost boringly accurate.  ;D

200 yards with a 10 inch barrel now that makes you a good shot, I cant even see the target at 200 yrds much less hit it :) I am pleased if I hit it a 50 yrds :) never mind the tight group.

That was a few years ago and my eyesight was still real good. At 64 now I can no longer shoot like that with open sights.  ::)

My moma told me when she reached about 90 that "this gettin old was not as much fun as she thought it would be" I'm beginning to understand what she ment.

I just picked up a 357 max (reamed 357 mag) 22" barrel for my NEF.  Handloaded some Max (180s), Mag (158 full wad), and had some Starline 38sp (full wad match).  All shot very well, with the 38sp actually doing the best groups (three shots touching at 50yds using a 4x scope).  I was plenty pleased and and plan on shooting quite a bit more of the light loads out of it since it has almost no recoil and is cheaper to feed.

I've had the same experience as Oscar2287 with my Handi Max.  It groups all three extremely well.  The .38s at 50 yards shoot a tight group a wee tad high because of muzzle jump due to slower velocity and more time in the barrel.  It's only about a half inch.

Well, you guys cleared up a question lurking in the recesses of what's left of my brain.  I'm starting to build a .357 Max on a Martini Cadet action and was wondering if the .38 and Mag ammo would have an accuracy problem due to the long jump to the rifling.  From what I read  here I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this choice.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

I'm planning on doing the same, please post pics of your progress.  :)

The rifle I'm starting with is a Sportco .22 Hornet conversion of an Austrailian cadet. So it's already a centerfire.

My goal is to make it look like an original military cadet, but chambered for 357.
