If Dixie and South Bend Replicas really do have that book then you should buy it if you don't have it.  But last I heard neither company actually have any copies left in stock.

How smooth should a smooth bore be,like a shotgun mirror smooth or like a pice of pipe? After honing the bore to remove some stuff leftover from casting it still has a lot of little spots. Is this normal for a DOM liner? Thanks a bunch for all the info you great People have given me.

Alot can happen when they pour molten iron over the liner. To get a good bond they pretty much have to get the outer part of the liner into a semi-molten state so that it will fuse to the iron.

No need to have it mirror smooth. When working with windage clearances of 1/40th of the bore diameter for projectiles, a little bit of roughness on the bore isn't gunna matter one bit.

Am going to try POR-15 paint on the barrel, have started the carriage with a secret wood, if it works I will tell eather way. Still don't know about live oak, My sorry nephew has not seen fit to chop down the tree I was going to use. Again thanks for the advise.

If I have it figured out You may see a pic. I am trying to use laminated southern yellow pine, it is a real pain to laminate. This project is taking a long time, have to many iron in the fire. Will show as I go along.

You are flying along on your project, check the start date on my SAMCC cariage project, 7 months, but who's counting!  Good work takes time, figuring out what to do and do-overs take longer.

I like the book and there are a number of suggestions particularly regarding the advantages of laminating that simply never occured to me.

Museum quality ? surprised to see you write that Dan. Relying on one source without research , without question is ok for building shooting cannons but even I would have to join the nit pickers , snipers , and desk bound non producers for a claim like that. I bet you would never say that about a Barrel !!! Damn Swede. Carriage building can be just as exacting as barrel bashing , it's all about what  or who you are building it for.

Depends on who's museum you are talking about, old world artsey fartsey or new world county museum and second hand junk store.

yeah , but if you follow the instructions in that book and know a little about how to use your tools you will get an perfect 1770 naval carriage model

its probably the one and only book about that subject , at least the only one I know about
but its still very well written by someone who have done a lot of research

so for someone who are going to build an realistic replica of very very high quality its a lot of good knowledge in it

ok you can find that info by own research also , but this is a good shortcut if you dont want to spend months in front of your computer
I know as I spent more then a year totally in front of my computer to try to learn as much as possible about cannon and mortar design , but there is still a lot to learn

Anti-seize, and put some method of removing it in the sleeve, like a screwdriver slot or pin holes for a spanner.  You may want to take it out some day.
